Passive Sub

What is a passive sub? Someone offered me one for a trade but I have no idea what "passive" means? Is their more types and what is so different about them?

OK, thanks for that link, but I don't understand all the proper terminology or anything that article had to offer...

"Fake Woofer"? Does it work or it it for show. I'm trying to read these sites but its hard to find what I want.

So your telling me when the power sub moves, its moving this passive sub with the air? If thats the case, I will pass the offer.

This might be my dads x-mas gift here, I don't want to buy him crap.

This is what it looks like, http://www.amazon.com/Bazooka-8-inch-Passive-Subwoofer-NOS8/dp/B00006HC8Q kinda. I only want 1 of these thing, i don't want to buy him 2 subs.

Thanks people.

I totally got what you were asking wrong, forget everything i said above! (in the case the passive just means there is no built in amplifier)

Ok, Ok, i think I got it.

I need a amp to power this sub just like the ones in my car. But is it a speaker or a sub? It says sub but I looked at a diagram and now I'm not sure what to think. Thanks.

My home suround sub (Klipsh) is a 10" sub in the front of the box and a 10" passive radiator in the rear.

The passive radiator is a cone with no coil.

Most people use this instead of a port.
