I have to say, it has always amazed me how many guys think they should be "sponsored" because it would be good for "me" -- I mean, maybe I'm nuts -- but is it not better to sell a retailer product that does not break and he can make money with, rather than giving his customer a free stereo?

I mean, wouldn't mr retailer be a little smarter if he would would take his customer and SELL a SYSTEM to him for $$ Profit $$

IMO "sponsorships" are the same as chicks in tank tops, pass holders, stickers, buy 3 get 4 and other attempts to hide from the retailer that he is paying his supplier too much in the first place -- if the gear isn't overpriced originally, how can a suppiler afford to take 25=60% off?

Why Oh Why do guys give into the Jedi Mindtrick again and again?

Talking

Soooo, what you are saying then is no?

And to be clear - I have never asked for, received, or used free gear and the Hearse will be no different.

BUT I would wager that an interesting or competitive car touring the local shows for a single summer with $5k manufacturer cost worth of gear would, in the immediate area of the car anyway, create more overall exposure and interest in a brand than that same $5k spent on newspaper or radio spots...

Dukky, you misread my post as I was speaking in general and not about you.I do not know of you ever asking for anything for free -- and that is why I respect you even though you are a cranky old fart...

I am sure you hearse will get lots of attention, will it translate into sales -- I think that will depend much upon what type of marketing is used...

Companies seem to get lost in their growth, they forget about the grass roots people, complain about the newbie’s in the scene. Next thing you know they go from handing out free stickers and T's to advertising in some high end mag that makes their egos feel good.
Reality is, print media isn’t going to get you a ton of exposure unless youre getting featured vehicles and 2 page s (please refer to DSS, SummitRacing, Jegs etc).
Magazines have huge overhead and you pay for that. Meanwhile, in all likely hood your demographic is sitting online.

People who advertise in print, many are often sold on it all (refer to Ego check). That being said, i suppose it is a great deal to spend multiple thousands on a quart page that you know every reader is spending less than 30 seconds looking at it.
Not only is this a great way to brand your product, you’re sure to get plenty of sales......Lets remember, you aren’t Jegs or summit and I added some sarcasm in there.

Oh well, soon enough people will realize that its better for them to advertise online, at least they can track traffic, clicks, referrers, sales and are pretty much guaranteed the same traffic with users staring at their logo for more than 30 seconds (30 seconds is being very giving at that)...Oh, did I mentioned that the rates are no where near the same?

This year PASMAG gave away 100,000's of thousands of magazines at shows( yes I pay for it but good at least people are getting them, people attending these shows spend money on things like stereos.) they gave free subscriptions to 50 dealers per agreement, which means all of Rockford’s dealers also sees my adds and so on( = thousands more of direct sales because PASMAG knows what there doing) internet = CHEAP! always has been always will be. Everyone wants a deal online no one pays full price. Do I want my line slandered and profits gutted from my dealers so some DIYérs can get some cheap gear?
Stroke my ego some more please I like it I like it.. I advertised here even had some good clearance sales with this board and it was a bomb, as far as I know everyone else’s sales did just the same. Internet is not the way its the cheap easy way to get a quick fix. I've had 2 page s( in the CES issue last year) I'm not saying that PASMAG is the be all end all but I hate the fact that you haven't all the facts.

Dukk you know by now if we were going to lay down some gear I’d throw some your way. That’s cause were friends it has nothing to do with business period.

Internets is a ok supportive form of advertising, you need to find the right place to advertise that supports your needs however.

Unless you have unique #’s, coupon system or… you couldn’t show me any results from your ads in those magazines. You can tell about all the people who walked in your front door, I made 10 million dollars last year too.
Icon, people had sales here and bombed? Maybe you need to re think your strategy of your online campaigns and be a bit more aggressive instead of waiting for people to walk through your front door or email you. You never had a sale here (that i knew about) so i cant really reflect on how others did things.
Regardless, I am a firm believer in saturating the market; I just think the “old schoolers” need to get onboard with the online wave.

Wait wait wait.. just hold on there my friend. Now I may be misinterpreting here, but it appears you are trying to tell me that it isn't all about me??

Yeah I know you were speaking generally, and you too John. If it makes you guys feel better - you'd be the first two I leaned on heavily. Ok?

Back to the topic... IMO I can see the merit of mag advertising, and it is certainly a better medium than, say, the newspaper - especially for brand advertising and not just 'this is on sale NOW' ads. I feel though that direct advertising can have a deeper, if less wide, impact.
