My car came with the factory "premium" system (06 MonteCarloSS). It sounded muddy, not loud enough and missing any low bass. The "premium" system came with a little (fujitsu by panasonic) amp that had 4 in and 8 out, bi-amped components.
At first, because it was new, there was no real interface. I left the factory head unit and used an LOC and my own active crossovers, components and subs. The door speakers had 6"mids and 1"tweeter, so it took some modifying the mounts to go with 6-1/2"components. Still wasn't up to what I was used too.
Then, I got one the first Soundgate Lanstar intefaces, and the PAC Steering wheel interface, so I could install the Alpine HU I already had. Since then, I upgraded the alpine to the 9887 with the HD tuner. I'm pretty happy with it. I've been missing my car and the stereo since its in winter storage. Its almost time to get it out for spring cleaning!!

The SLOC's don't work well at all because of the roll off and the amplification(most sloc's will only handle between 12-18 watts). Your best bet is to change everything, but if you do that you will need expensive wiring harness to take care of all the data turn ons and fading.
It's an 08 Wrangler Unlimited (4 door) and like you said, the CANbus does most of the work.

I know LOC, but what is the S in SLOC for?

lol sorry, the place I work for the model number is SLOC. I end up calling them all that! There's a 1 and 2 but they don't work the best for chryslers. The best piece we've seen so far is a RE-Q which is made by MTX. It does everything we need. It has roll off correction, provides an amp turn on, will take the high level in from an amplified system, has its own crossovers. There is also a 5 channel model available.

installed one of the RE-Q a week before FS let me go and it works. i would get an amp with a remote gain or bass witch ever it is. just gets you more control over the sub bass while keeping the bass on the deck at minimal

Yes, remote gain control is going to be a must to make this work right
