questions on amps

Friend of mine want's to trade me a system that he has for a few engine parts that i have. And i just wanted to ask a couple questions about the system he has. First off i am a little confused by what and how he is running this system. He has a kicker amp wich is a zx750.1 mono amp and he is running 2 subs to it. He has to tie both positive's and both negative's together from both subs and then plug it into the amp that way, because the amp only has 1 positive and 1 negative connection.
The speakers he has are 2 kicker cvr comp 12's in a ported box, I will say that it sure does hit hard, but the set up seems kind of strange to me... He told me that the guy that sold him the subs and the amp reccomended he buy the mono amp and run 2 subs off of it. I dont know why that would be reccomended?
I am not a stranger to systems, But i am a stranger to this type of set up.
Is this something people commonly do? Seems to me it would be easier to get an amp that has 2 positive and 2 negative connections instead of just 1 each. Anyways any information on this set up would be appriciated, i have not made a desiscion on wether to trade or not yet.

Totally common and no problem to wire a sub setup this way.

so is the kicker zx750.1 mono amp a pretty good amp? how does it compare to a fosgate punch 1000bd amp? How many watts is each sub getting being wired this way? I think they are 2 ohm 12's and I know they are cvr comps.
