I have a 30/40A relay (standard 4/5 pin Bosch type) and I'll be using it to power on 3 amps and possibly an eq in the future. I'm just wondering that since I'll be drawing no more than 1A (max), do I need a lower rated relay? Does it make a difference? Any help appreciated.

You can never overkill something.

That relay will be fine, just FUSE it to avoid fire. You can also use that relay to power up Neon or LEDs when the stereo is on.

Thanks guys. I'm big on the fusing, so that's not an issue (HU remote out = 16awg/0.5A, relay +12V = 14awg/7.5A, 3 x remote to amps = 16awg/1A each). I just wasn't sure if it was too big a relay. Cheers.

no such thing as too big a relay. (unless you went out and bought a 200A 12V contactor, then I'd say you're nuts)

if your relay is up front, its always nice to wrap it in some foam tape so you dont hear that big CLICK when you turn on your deck.Volkswagon sells these little foam relay boots.Hey..were all sometimes!
