Recommended Amps for Single 12" Type R
Hey everyone..I know this is probably a very common post, but I couldnt' find any topics that were exact the same as my question. Anyways, I have a single 12" Alpine Typre R DVC 2ohm sub, and am looking for a perfect fit in terms of an amplifier. I am looking for something mono, and hopefully under $250ish.
I know alot of you are powering the Type R with more continuous RMS then the sub is rated at, but I am looking for a very solid amp that won't kill the sub but also won't underpower it. Let me know on any suggestions!
One last thing, what do you guys recommend for an amplifier wiring kit in terms of brand name/gauge, etc. Thanks a million!

Dont know if you want to stay new, or if you are willing to get used, but Alpine has two lower end models, mrp-m450 and mrp-m650, either of which will work.
The 450 should be pretty easy to find brand new and authorized for $250, the 650 may be tougher.
Either amp should be good, depending how loud you want to be able to get, personally, I would suggest the 650 just to have the extra headroom.
There are hundreds of other suggestions, but those are the first two I thought of.

I am definately looking at something new, as my first amp was bought used and I was not impressed with it at all.
In looking at the 2 Alpine amps you suggested, which one would be the best bet? I know there are tons of amps out there, but I would like a higher-end and very solid one. I am confused at how the Type R is suppose to be wired..considering the 1ohm/2ohm/4ohm load. Could someone please clarify that a bit? Any other suggestions though? Hifonics? JBL? Kicker? RF?
Thanks!

At $250, you may find your selection pretty limited for new amps with any serious power.
If you can find that mrp-m650 for a price you are willing to pay, that is a very good choice.
Since your sub is a dual 2 ohm model, you want an amp that will develop good power at 4 ohms.
You can wire your sub two ways, series and parallel, for either a 1 or 4 ohm load.

JL also has some other tutorials here, which you may find informative.

Your sub when wired one way or the other will be either a 1 ohm load on the amp or a 4 ohm mono load on the amp. Your budget is going to severly limit you on a new amplifier I hate to say, that is one that is a good amp and not a kwality one. You have no need for a true mono sub amplifier unless you plan on adding a additional subwoofer (and a identical one) into the system at a later date. A DVC 4 ohm sub would have opened up more options for you on a amplifier and then you could have chosen a mono type amp to provide maximum output to a 2 ohm load (called a parallel circuit for the dvc 4 ohm sub).

If my budget is going to limit me on a solid amplifier. I guess I will just have to spend a little more then hey? Lol. Anyways, I was confused at the comment saying "you have no need for a true mono sub amplifier unless I plan on adding something else." Don't I just want a mono amplifier because I am only wanting to power 1 sub? I was a little confused there..
Anyways, with the budget thing thrown out the window I guess then, what are some recommendations for amps now? I'd like to keep the price resonable, but a big upgrade is definately needed and I am willing to pay. Life sucks though doesn't it?

I also have a single 12" Type-R dual 2 ohm sub, and have been using an old school MTX 2160 with a rated output of 300W RMS mono but measured at 400W @ 4ohms. It has kick, but just not enough for me.
I've bought a Rockford Fosgate 750S Power series (rated 750W @ 4ohm mono) but it should put out close to 900W I hope.
It's in my trunk but not hooked up yet due to my lack of a ground distro block, which I may have by tomorrow and will be working to install.
I'd say depending on how loud you're looking to go, you may want to look for something with at least 25% headroom over the wattage you desire, so you don't clip the output.
In my case, I aimed for 750W, and hope to get that extra 25% headroom from the RF amp being underrated.

Thanks for the quick replys guys..appreciate it!
I am confused with the "clipping" term, as well as why to purchase an amp rated at 750RMS but capable of pumping out 900RMS of power. Is that not too much for this particular sub? I am a rookie if you haven't noticed..lol, but I seem to be puzzled by this. I know this may have something to do with gain setting and all that jazz, but it would be awesome if that could be clarified. I will get back to you guys on the offered amps as well..thanks!
