Selecting A Head Unit?

I am kinda new to the whole car audio thing but I am getting versed very quickly, there is alot to know. What are some of the main features that you should look for when sleecting a new head unit to replace the factory one? I have a 2008 GMC serria HD 2500 non bose system. I am pretty sure that the stock unit is a double din from the size of it.

I like the idea of the HDD media deck with out the CD player, CD's seems to always end up everwhere and scratched up for me. Should I be concerned with the amount of bit rate it has like 24bit? I know that the higer the total RMS the higher output it has. What about the the amount of preamp volts? Is there an amount that is better, higher I assume.

I am not too worried about selecting a apecific BRAND but more concerned with getting the best head unit possible.

I will be running 4 alpine 6 1/2 17 type R's in the doors, ths sotck tweeters, and I will be adding a JL10W6 sub and either an Alpine PDX5 or JL 450/4v2.

Any input would be great.
Thanks
Phil

If you have steering wheel controls, to use them you are going to need a interface to start. Next up the proper vehicle wiring interface. After that a double din headunit will indeed be the logical choice. Eclipse has a damn good deal on the AVN6200 unit right now. It supports dual dvd drives, high volt preouts, sat radio ready, bluetooth ready, Ipod ready, 7" lcd and built in GPS. For tonal response it is going to be hard to beat.

Kenwood has a stellar double din unit as well, definitely more money than the Eclipse right now (due to the sale on the Eclipse) but it also packs a little more into the unit. It is also hard to come by. Where it wins is with the built in bluetooth (if you need it) and the mapping system is Garmin based (so easily updateable for a small fee) vs. the Eclipse is purchase a new mapping disc set(definitely a little $) (or find a copy somewhere for free).
