hey guys. i sold a guy a pair of Kaption subs i had a while back. they're Kaption COMP-108's (8ohm each, 175RMS a piece). with the money i got from them i put towards a Pioneer Premier TS-W2000SPL, it definately gets LOUD.. maybe i'm getting old or something but i'm not much into the huge bass for daily driving anymore.

so anyway, the guy needs some money and i seen them for sale on a local forum, and he said he would sell them back to me for what he bought them off me for ($100). from what i remember these subs sounded pretty good to me (alot better SQ than the Pioneer) being they are 10's and they are in a custom ported box from Kaption. but what i am worried about is, would it be a step backwards to buy these again? i dont have alot of money right now for SQ subs, was thinking along the lines of Soundsplinter or Dayton.. but from what i remember i liked the sound of these Kaptions and i did feel bad for selling them. with these wired to 4ohms i will only be pushing ~400 rms to them (amp will do ~800 at 2ohm). if i buy these again there isnt much room left for upgrading and i'll be left with a pair of subs that is ~3 years old already. but the box sounds so much nicer than anything i've ever made myself. if i was to buy these i'd keep the Pioneer and make it a HUGE box, and tune it high for competitions (i only go to 1 or 2 a year) and keep the Kaption's for daily driver's.

i dont know.. i want them back but would it be a step in the wrong direction?
thanks for reading!

I had a lot of experience with the older Kaption gear and the Comp series subs were good sounding drivers but certainly not the best I've heard. Good for their price point of their day. If you run these old COMP 10's you will only be using half your amps available power also (although two 10" COMP's ported should be loud enough for most SQ systems with 400rms).

IMO, the deal you have at $100 is great but if you have a bit more ot spend I would go with either a single RE SE 12 or a Soundsplinter RL-p with 800rms in a ported enclosure. SQ would be better, it will have better low end, and the enclosure will be smaller to save you some trunk.

i think i might buy these for now.. maybe in the future i will get the 12" RL-p (my dream sub). i haven't had much luck building enclosures, they ended up looking nice but not sounding so nice. in the future if i buy an RL-p i will have to find someone locally around my area that can build me an enclosure using the T/S parameters to get the best performance possible from the sub! the audio shops get alot of their custom enclosures done at a local cabinet shop around here, i'm not sure if they actually tune the boxes or just build them (i'd say they just build them). i think i am going to buy these for the time being (i have alot of performance upgrades planned for my car as well) so it may be awhile before i can buy a really high end sub.

these definately sounded alot better than my current sub (it does get quite loud but i find it very "peaky") because well, it is an SPL sub. still would do the trick for me though in a bigger box just for competitions.
thanks so much for the reply!

you have an amazing setup, btw!

I'm sure Soundsplinter (and most other driver company's) would be happy to design you an enclosure for one of their driver's given your trunk specs and then you could have a good local cabinet maker build a quilty piece for you.
Lot's of good wood shops in your area.
Otherwise their are lot's of forum members to help you out with designs.

Best of luck in your endeavers and I hope the Kap's keep you satisfied until the update bug hits.

thanks for all the info! yeah i hope the update bug holds off for a bit, i already have the urge to swap my 2.2L engine in the Cavalier to a 3400 lol.. got it looking nice, but i need some "go" now. i find most ported setups i had a bit on the "peaky" side, around the tuning freq probably but this one wasnt as noticeable. have to see what happens.

thanks again

i've decided to hold off for a while. the winter beater is coming out soon anyway, so i'm just going to keep an eye on the for sale forum etc. for awhile instead.

again thanks for the advice, i know how i am with the update bug.. i always want something louder and cleaner sounding at the same time! keeping my eye out for a sub(s) that will sound great and still handle enough juice
