No, it is because many of the companies doing these installs care more about the look then the sound.

EXAMPLE:

EZ-motorsports Polk-Momo Civic (Claimed to be over $100,000 by the owner) was one of the worst sounding stereo's I have ever had the joy of hearing. ANd it was no loud at all. However, it looked effin good and it wins shows.

A good sub in a proper box with correct power should NOT sound bad ! My theory is some people push there subs to the brink of distortion and when pushing a sub that hard cabin pressure comes into play just like the cushion created by the air in a box . Open hatch equals less damping and speaker starts to lose control . Of course this is a theory on how to make a good sub sound bad . Other reasons would be poor install , equipment , and tuning .

The big problem with this arrangement is the creation of too much free air space when the hatch is open. You get the same effect in convertibles, etc. It changes the SPL of the cabin and the subs don't resonate as good/loud. Basic example, what sounds louder to you...yelling in an open field or in a 10x10 room?

^ but a good sounding system will still sound good, and a loud system will still be loud.

^ The car is a hatchback..

If you want the bass to be more consistent with the hatch open or closed (it will still vary to a degree) then look into a bandpass or barrier loaded enclosure.

If you have your subs in a enclosed situation, like bandpass, loading wall etc... with the hatch open the sub(S) will still sound ok cause they still create pressure within the enclosure. If your subs are on the face of the box, and especially ported, when you open the hatch the subs move more freely and you loose a ton of bass and you may hear port noise and or frapping of the woofer.

Now,, if you have your hatch closed, but a window or door open, it's less worse cause the bass wave is longer from the rear to the front and can compress a bit,, sometimes opening a window or door can actually make the sound louder and lower.

I had a citation before with bandpass and it worked good with the hatch open too.
