I have been using Hushmat for a couple of years now and have never had to use a roller. It always sticks, even if the surface is kinda dirty. It's got the metal in between the layers of poly, so it doesn't cut you like the metal side out stuff does. Retail on it is $20.00 for 2 sq feet. I go through about 3 boxes a month.

what do u do about air pockets or maintaining a clean install without ripples or the like... doesnt it hinder reinstallation of carpet and panels and such?

I use small enough peices, I don't get air pocket problems, I feel that my fingers usually are better at making sure it contacts with the metal as often times the identations in the panels are smaller then the roller can get into.
