The spare in my car is carried forward of the rear suspension and the front wall of the well does not contain it. The spare would not help stop anything.
In my '93 Probe GT I removed the spare (it was only a space-saver size anyway) & used the well for my subs. Went I went on a longer trip, I used the factory carpet that I removed & placed the tire on top. I had a flat once in a local neighbourhood & one can of "fix-a-flat" wasn't enough to even get me three blocks to the nearest gas station to fill it with air. The tire's sidewall got a little damaged. Therefore, I would recommened at least two cans.
With my new system in my 2003 A4, the car came with a full-size spare & I didn't want to remove it. Although I hope I never have to use it (two panels & subwoofers have to be removed to get it out) I need the security of knowing that I'll never be stranded & won't be stuck to doing 60 km/h on a space-saver.
