You need one because below your tuning point the port becomes an effective 'big azz hole in your box' Basically the air in the box no longer works as a spring to help control cone movement....
If your amp does not have subsonic filtet I suggest you either turn the volume down, change the box, or get either an active or passive filter....
I think you can find a passive subsonic filter that works inline with your RCA cables... (maybe try parts express?) OR, with a little know how you can make your own....
PM me if you need more help...

Anyways...there is no reason you need to have your bass at +6 and your gains at %90. That's just a recipe for disaster.
If you want more bass than what you currently have get a 2nd L7 or something.

Yea turning it down is all well and good and will probably solve the problem... but you will also loose output.... If you dont mind the loss then thats fine... but then WTF would you port a daily driver box so high in the first place, if not for an increase in output ????
You also leave yourself open to disaster if its turned up to the point where everything is fine 99% of the time, but then one day you put on a song that has a heavy bass note at 25hz and BAM -sub is toast....
If it was me and it was for daily driving, Id put it in a diff box tuned around 25-30hz... either that or get a passive filter... they are like $15 dollars to buy or a couple bux to make...
Honestly guys, there is a right way and then there is a wrong way....
