Water on my amps... Am I screwed?
#1
Hey guys, I forgot to shut the window last night, and it rained. Turns out it got both my amps. They were vertical so some of teh water hit where teh RCA's go and speaker wire. I havnt turned the car on yet cause im scared that it will fry the amps. What should I do? I dryed it as best as i could, and some ventilation is going through, but not much. Also, it hit the sub box, and that is now damp, not sure but i think it also hit the front of the subs too. but not much there.
anyways, what should I do, will it still work?
thanks

Take your amps out of your vehicle, open them up and blow them out with compressed air, or similar. Water in electronics that are OFF will not cause damage, its when you turn the device on, and the water shorts something out that you are in trouble.

yeah buddy just dry it out and put it back in. as for the sub box. you could probly take it out and set it in the sun to dry. it may be fine after that. but then again. it could start coming apart on you. the water on the cone of the sub will not hurt it i guess unless its a pressed paper cone and its not sealed good or something...?
I once left a kenwood amp in the bed of my truck when it rained an inch or so that night. hehe. i just pulled the case off and let it dry. then had to scrape off all the corrosion. haha.. but it worked fine afterward.

When i Had my zapco 4.0 and 9.0 i opened my trunk and a big chunk of damn snow fell on them.... and went into the fans. (not cool at all) i pulled em out and took a heat gun and lightly dried the water the best i can... left it for a day or 2 inside and put it back in the car after.. sounded good as new

^^^ Agreed with all the above. Just want to add one thing. Don't let them dry on their own, open them up and use one of the above methods of drying. If you don't they could stay damp for a long time. While dampness wouldn't cause any functional problems, it can cause corrosion. (When I say damp I mean more mooisture than typical in car humidity)
