Man I wish you would have tried it free air. There's a lot of crap inside that box. I wonder if one of the braces are rattling... hard to tell without hearing it first hand. There is also the chance that the "W" cone is pulling away from the front cone. Just thought of that. There is a rise in the middle of the "W"cone that mounts to the center of the front cone. If they separate, it would make some noise... The only way to fix it is to pull off the front face (without tearing the surround) and re-glue it to the W cone. It glues in the center and around the surround.

Anyone that can get JL recones can get the front face with surround. Then you just have to re-glue one back on to the W cone... Good luck with that one bro...

You might be on to something here Paul, when Bill and I were listening to it he was thinking it was maybe the dust cap.

Crappy drawing but I think you'll have a better understanding. I have the actual cross-section of the W7's in front of me but no batteries in the camera. lol

That theory would make sense to me (slightly) since on hard flexes, it acts up ...
However, what would happen here? The whole top piece would fly off? Wouldn't it of done something already, by now? I'm playing it and playing it and there's been no results, good or bad ...

I just thought that maybe but now, the damn thing would blow up. But that just doesn't happened.

Not necessarily. It's glued all the way around the surround. The surround is sandwich glued between the front and W cones. I'm sure it will eventually separate until then, it's just really annoying... Here's the best pic I could get. The flier is pretty old.

like Paul said attach some foam to the back of the cone over where the wires are.

sometimes it would leave a mark and sometimes it would not, depending on the type of insulation used on the wire.

if that's not the problem then something is up with the suspension. the spiders might be folding too much. how many spiders are on that thing?

The old JL's didn't have insulation over the leads... made finding the problem easy.

There's only one spider.

LMFAO Ya, that might help. So long as the surround doesn't tear. That would be what will happen next. Either the glue will let go and the front cone will fall off and you can glue it back on or else the surround will tear where the glue starts to let go and it becomes crap.

Be sure to make a vid. lol

I looked for any kind of abrasion marks on the leads and the back of the cone.....nothing there.....

If the dust cap has separated from it's center glue point, that may account for the noise. It doesn't start until there is a fair bit of excursion and if it is being flexed it could be bouncing off the top end of the former. At one point I was wondering if it was hitting the back plate but I don't think it was moving far enough....

Rob if you want to pop it out again and power it up the weather is supposed to be better by the weekend.....
