Nothing wrong with not knowing, you just learned something valuable at the same time. Being in business so long and in the industry twice as long (holy crap, 20 years snuck up on me), I too have had to learn some things the hard way. One that continually pops up is the kid who works so hard for his money getting the shaft.
I agree that the net is here to stay, if I had the time and inclination to stay in this industry instead of doing my career change, rest assured, it would be done. I actually have a quote in place to get this done. Making the Canadian people aware of it however is a entirely whole different ball game, this is where that ball starts to talk. The larger stores can afford to carry a money losing enterprise like a online shop until it's feet are no longer wet and it can stand on it's own. For the smaller shops, the $6K investment in a site and making it work is small change as compared to the advertising to get the people to know about it and then the inventory necessary to make it float.
There is a reason as to why most of the US sites don't stock items.....overhead = more $. Yet they tell you usually in stock in "X" days. And then it doesn't arrive or they can't get it anymore. You know what, I would sell things all day long under cost if I could not get them either.....

Just a little add on to the post that has transformed into a debate. Rob, personally, there are plenty of people who don't care at all about a warranty on there product. Is there a chance the product can be defective, absolutely. But, it is a small gamble, and I emphasize small because some of the products I can find online from unauthorized dealers are about half the price they are in a B&M store. So say, my sub blows, I still have the other half of my savings from the purchase to buy a new one. And when it comes to high end audio, defective parts are a smaller issue than the assembly line brands. Anywho, enough ranting for me, nose back in the University textbooks.

Mmmmmmmm, KD. I haven't had that in a long time.
Ebay.......... be vewy vewy afwaid. "Oh, it doesn't work eh. Well it worked when I had it. You must have broken it and are now trying to screw me.......... get lost". Be ready for that.
Online buying from the USA. Oh no, Mr. Border man is going to empty your wallet. $100 item and $60 in border fees (roughly). Doh!!! All of a sudden it's the same price as your dealer (generally speaking) and you have no support without having to pay AGAIN to the border man when sending it back. Oh, but you say you don't use UPS or FEDEX, etc. You use USPS and it's only $5 brokerage. Yeah, but you still have to pay all the taxes, etc and many US online stores will not use USPS. Hello rapage UPS and FEDEX again.
Ok, so you are broke...... you have no money. You have to be thrifty with your dough. So I'd suggest looking into ALL the facts about online shopping or it's going to bite you. Buy used from someone reputable locally if you have no money and can't afford to go to your local dealer. Oh yeah, I'd still check in with your local dealer anyways. Sometimes they actually have some used or demo stuff you may be able to buy for a good deal. Sometimes people are upgrading and if you are there at the rite time, you may be able to work something out or the dealer will keep an open eye for you. Dealers want to create good customer relationships. IF they can help you out now and you are satisfied with a used deal, it's likely you'll go back there one day when you want something new. So give them a chance. Explain your situation and budget and see what they can do for you. It may not work out every time as there are still azz-holes in this biz, but doesn't hurt to try. Plus you'll get support. And I'm mainly refering to non-big-box dealers. Big Box.......... don't think you'll get anything there.

It's surprising how much of a deal you can get at big box establishments on equipment, when you let them know that you how low they are allowed to go on a sale, and what they are allowed to throw into the pot to make the sale....
just a thought...
