Wire size for speakers????
OK, sorry if its been covered befor but my searches didnt answer my questions. What size speaker wire do I need to run aprox 12-13' with 150w RMS @12v to my mids and the same distance to the tweets with 75w?
Also if a good teflon coated silver wire is used can the gauge size be reduced or is it the same as copper? I have quite a large roll of twisted 2x18g stranded silver with a teflon coating that would be nice to use. If I twist 2 pairs together I will end up a 2x16g but I am unsure if that will be ok or a waste of time. Thanks

if i were you i would avoid twisting wires together. personally, i like to run 12awg, but thats just me. 14 would be fine. but there are some out there that say that sizes of wires don`t make alot of difference. i`ve read that in some competitions, guys have won spl using lamp cord. i`m not sure if i would do that just to prove a point, but find a happy medium inbetween. i get my wire from a whole sale outfit in mississauga, around 50 cents a foot for 12awg.
14 awg is good for your mids and 16 awg is good for your tweets. Personally i just run 14 awg throughout the car, 2 sets to each door, 1 set to each side of the dash, 2 sets to the rear and 12awg to the subs. I've been doing it like this for 20 years with no problems. Experiment for yourself to determine if you can hear a difference. My feeling is if I can't hear a difference in my house on a quiet night then I sure as hell won't in a noisy car.
