Ben, are you sure the alt is 75 stock? My brothers is a 55 in his Honda. If it is 75, you should be fine running 1200 watts. Down the road you might want to upgrade to a bigger alt if you ever run more power than that. But for someone on a tight budget, I think that alt (if it is 75) will hold up fine for ya.

1990 Honda Civic's came with a 60 amp alternator, be it either the 1.5 or 1.6L. I have these in stock.
Yep, you need to upgrade your alternator. Should be able to retrofit an old Delco 9SI into it without to much trouble, 105 amps, for less than half the cost of custom alternators.

Buddy, I got something better for ya.
A second alternator. It's a self exciting GM S10-type alternator - manufactured by Powermaster. 65+ amps. Chromed and used for about two months. Still have box and test tags. I have custom brackets that will allow you to install this alternator to where your air con goes. I'm assuming you don't have air con, as very few 4th gen Civics came with one.
The belt goes onto the outer section of the crank pulley.
With this setup and a second battery, you have a dedicated power source just for the stereo!
It works with all D series Honda motors. I sold my Civic, so the brackets and alternator are just sitting on a shelf. Make me an offer.

I also have another chrome alternator that died after ten plus years of service. You can have it for free with the above. Probably needs to be rebuilt - the case is still nice.

the GM CS144 alternator fits well on those motors. all that's required is a 30" belt and 4- 3/8 washers(used as spacers),and a self exciting regulator(internal).
them alts can be built to be bullet-proof with huge output.
