depends on the application and your amplifier power, in general when doing a wall use aprox 100 sq inches of port per 1000 watts of power. seems to work well for me. in trunk or hatch boxes i tend to stick to cone area = port area ... it also differs because tuning to lower frequencies in small boxes yield a really long port length and you have to sacrifice for smaller port openings to physically fit them into the enclosure... best thing is to experiment and see what works best for your application

i made a box for 3 8s, it had like 42sq inhes of port area, the drivers had issus loading right, when we burped it they just flapped fo a second till the box loaded up, could this be to much port area?
im just trying to figure out what defins a port, as to where it starts where it ends
say i took the side off a square box, what is the port in that situation?
