there are many different theories on that one.. some say less than half the amount of cone area you have, some say less than the total amount of cone area, some say much more, some say much less..

I mean at what point does a port stop being a port, and become a gaping hole in your box that doesn’t do anything?

depends on the application and your amplifier power, in general when doing a wall use aprox 100 sq inches of port per 1000 watts of power. seems to work well for me. in trunk or hatch boxes i tend to stick to cone area = port area ... it also differs because tuning to lower frequencies in small boxes yield a really long port length and you have to sacrifice for smaller port openings to physically fit them into the enclosure... best thing is to experiment and see what works best for your application

i made a box for 3 8s, it had like 42sq inhes of port area, the drivers had issus loading right, when we burped it they just flapped fo a second till the box loaded up, could this be to much port area?

im just trying to figure out what defins a port, as to where it starts where it ends

say i took the side off a square box, what is the port in that situation?

any hole in an encloser is to be considered a port if that helps at all. by any chance did you make your port removable so you could play with your port length or try a round port as aposes to the slotted.
