An average deck of decent quality privides at least 4 volts output and up to 8 volts--spec rated.

If it doesn't then don't buy it. Let's say your amp goes full tilt at 4 volts your deck has to put out 4 volts also so they both reach 100% Volume at the same time....adding any extra voltage on top of the 4 volts into the amp will provide the amp with extra current during peak transients and will help in the dynamics of the sound...without having to lower the impendance of the amp to create more Power/SPL from it.---A deck output of only 2 volts would require turning the amps gain down to 2 volts also...instead of 4 volts.

Usually a decent line driver will put out 9 volts RMS.

ok i got that much but is there any way to actually measure the voltage coming from my deck? its the 5443 and i know its supposed to have 4v preouts but i would like to measure it and make sure.

Check the owners manual... it should say it in the spec sheet, I assume if it says 4 Volts it will actually do 4 volts.

As for as finding the actual voltage ouput, I am not too familiar with that. I assume you send a 1Khz signal through the deck and measure your average voltage across the RCA's.
