Not currently, but I am an engineering student who has fun with FEA.

The variables when looking at thermal power handling include: coil diameter, coil height, surface area, coil material, number of layerings, former material, cooling system, etc. Simply saying that a 4" diameter voice coil guarantees good SPL is false, as I can design a speaker with a 2.5" voice coil that will handle more power daily and on bursts than on some speakers with 4" diameter voice coils.
I don`t think you can design a sub with a 2.5" coil that can take power that a 4" coil can, and be as efficient at 40k plus, sorry don`t see it.
We have tested pretty much every spl driver on the market. We know what louder and whats not. Hook up 4 ddz2`s to a 2.5" coil and call me in the morning.

Compared to any of the DD subs, certainly not. My comment is not meant to suggest that every driver with a coil larger than 2.5" can easily be defeated; rather, I was attempting to demonstrate that a 4" diameter coil does not guarantee higher power handling than a smaller diameter voice coil in the same way that a driver with an 18" cone does not always displace more air than a 10" driver.

So Your saying if it`s not a dd sub then it can be defeated too?!?! Wow.....
An 18 vrs a 10 is install problems, cone area is cone area.

cone area without excursion is nothing.

It`s all based on install. At port tunning how much excursion are your subs moving? And were not talking daily here.

Exactly.
People keep thinking that Xmax is what makes SPL, yet subs like CV Strokers kicked *** for years with hardly any, daily or not.

ok I read some of the posts but it was too long so I will just put in my two cents. If two subs are powered by the same power, which is unlikely as even if the resistance is the same their impedance will be differant when playing but lets say we had two woofers with exactly the same power and exactly the same cone area. Xmax is unimportant, lets say they both are moving the same amount though (not related to Xmax as Xmax is not reached under most circumstances). If they have the same SD and are moving the same amount then in a free air situation how loud they will be comes down to two things the first is linearity of motion which is not a T/S parameter. If one subs is moving linearly it will be louder than one sub that is not moving linearly. However that said to get more linear the sub also usually has to employ stiffer suspension which means at the same power it will tend to not move the same amount, so it all is a interplay between linearity and freedom of motion. The second factor is cone stiffness (again not a T/S parameter), if one has a floppy cone it won't be as loud as the other which has a stiff cone. However again the stiffer the cone the higher the moving mass which means the more power if will take to get it to move the same distance as a lighter, floppier cone. So as you can see everything is a balance and T/S parameters don't mean anything, especially once you put the woofer in a box and start playing a dynamic source. If someone could come up with a completely linear woofer that didn't require 6 spiders (aka very stiff) to make it linear and used the strongest, lightest cone you can make it would be loud.

Nope, I think there is still a communication issue here. I was merely paying homage to DD as they have done great work with thermal power handling (if only they would disclose more info about those glues ).

I am not talking about one specific situation. If you agree that SPL is very install dependent, I don't see why the same leap cannot be made with the design of a speaker. a 4" diameter voice coil that is 1mm tall would not be able to handle as much power as a 2.5" diameter voice coil that is 100mm tall. Never have I argued anything other than that a 4" diameter voice coil tells you nothing of it's power handling capabilities. There are a lot of variables in speaker design, and my only concern has been that looking at only one variable (the diameter of the voice coil) does not tell you very much about the end result.

Yeesh guys, don't over complicate things and maybe relax a little bit?
