Honestly,

physics and the understanding of what audio is and what it can do. You learn the most from what we don't think about. What would your definition of loud be? You could go extreme 9+ and be loud but maybe not the loudest in you class, but it's loud. You could also go in Street A and pull off a number 20 decibels lower and still be considered loud.

The box is probably the biggest factor in SPL output. Of course, there are so many factors to take into consideration.

A friend of mine had a single orion XTR 12" sub in a pretty large bandpass box (can't remember the specs), but with only about 250 watts, it sounded louder than most systems I've heard with double that amount of power. The box was branded by orion, so I'm guessing it was designed specifically for the sub. It was loud, but I still prefer sealed enclosures ... Guess I'm a wimp.

As in:
What makes a hatch louder than a trunk.
Why is it easier to get car A louder than car B.
Why the hell is a CRX so great for SPL.
Etc.

Even if this isn't what he was talking about I know I would like to know the answers (or should I say opinions ).
I think it all has to do with loading.....
