Question

How do you decide which sub 10", 12", 15", 18" to use? Do you base it in on available trunk room, is it a personal preference? I realize that there are a lot of factors in determining what you choose but I am relatively new to car audio and don't know where to begin on picking a suitable sub. I have been reading through numerous forums and realize that everyone has a personal prefernece but are there some general advantages to each or some determining factors? I drive a 97 Grand Prix, don't want to use my entire trunk, listen to rap R&B and Hip hop mostly, more concerned with SPL then SQ. Thanks for helping a noob.

i guess it mostly depends on the room you have/want to work with and what you prefer the most......or if you're building for a class in a competition oraganization. If you plan to compete....build for a class

I tend to agree with the kid above.

Space is usually the biggest issue. Also The bigger subs also tend to be louder with other factors equal.

I've found that the bigger the sub, the louder and lower the bass. The smaller the sub, the tighter and punchier the bass. Ofcourse power handling and quality of the woofer come into play along with alot of other variables. I chose my 15 because I listen to alot of rap and like very low bass, trunk space wasn't important either.

If you listen to rap and need trunk space, look into a single 10 inch Kicker Solobaric L7 in a ported box. I've had experience with this set-up in my car and it's very impressive. Good luck.

As far as output is concerned, I think it depends a lot more on the enclosure design than the cone size.

I've always liked the sound of a 15 in a smaller sized sealed enclosure.
