I decided to go the 3 way route and I've never looked back. I may have the cheap q-logic kicks (with dynamat installed) for use with my setup, but it still sounds much better than my old 2 way.

I just switched to a budget 3 way or 4-wayish system using what I had and it sounds way better than the old set up of front 5 1/4" components and rear 6x9's.

Maybe someone can give me some pointers as I'm still in the process of tuning. It seems that the crossover points make a huge difference and I haven't got in to the eq yet. But here's the thing, I'm using my HU in a 3-way active system so the low signal RCA's go to the subs, the midrange RCA's go to the 5 1/4's (kick panels) and the high range RCA's feed the passive crossover that came with the 5 1/4 components. That passive Xover is, I think, at 3.6khz at 12 bd/octave. I figured this was to protect the tweeter so I've fed the tweeters and a pair of 3.5's (both mounted in the doors)of the same brand and model line from the passive Xover.

Here are the crossover points that I have set in the HU

Low LPF - 63hz @12db/octave
Midrange HPF - 80hz @ 12db/ovtave
Midrange LPF - 1khz @ 12db/octave
Highrange HPF - 1.2khz @ 12db/octave

Then, of course, I can't change the points on the passive Xover.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

An eq is used to help obtain what you percieve as a flat response. There isn't one speaker that can reproduce all of the audible frequencies (20Hz-20kHz), they all have peaks and valleys in the response. When you combine drivers that are strong in given frequency ranges it generally eliminates the need to adjust the gain applied throughout the spectrum, because instead of "boosting" or "cutting" (say 200Hz-500Hz for example) from a single driver to compensate for it's peaks or valleys, you place another driver that reproduces that range well. Passive crossovers can be adjusted, but is a very labour intensive process, and the manufacterers will do the R&D for you, so you generally never need to do so. Crossover points are only important to keep the driver reproducing frequencies that it does well and from trying to reproduce frequencies it can't physically handle. Active systems included in external amplifiers make adjustment easy, as most times changing the crossover point is as easy as turning a dial. The difficulty, and another part of the R&D process that manufacterers do, is matching driver tones. It all comes down to the construction of the driver and what you are asking the driver to do, hence why "good" audio isn't definitive. But then again, that is what makes this hobby so much fun... Your quest for aural nirvana will undoubtedly change, just the same as what you will ask of your audio system will change
