I am not judging anything, just offering the following for consideration: I recall an install judge that used a ball point pen as his gauge of whether a grill or cover is sufficient. If he could touch a speaker or battery terminal with the tip of the pen then you lose.
Kinda used to **** off the guys that used that heavy duty expanded metal over their subs. Suddenly it was insufficient

in the iasca rule book, page inst13 under speaker integrity, i wouldnt consider that grill adequate as a very funtional part of the speaker is left unprotected, aka, i would take points from you, i would also ask how these considerably heavier than factory a pillars are securely mounted to the vehicle to ensure they stay in place in the event of an accident

The only way to get the a pilars out is to use panel pullers and shatter the retention clip.
For added safety a metal strap was secured to the rear side of the 4" aluminum baffle then fastened to the body.
In the event of crash the lower section of the a pillar will remain in place.
The upper section will perform like from the factory.

Ok. I am going to out this one to bed.
Grills are judged accordingly to where the speakers are and how the car is presented.
For example grills on dash mounted or A-pillar mounted speakers do not have to withstand the G-force a Kick panel speakers would have. Also the openings on those dash/a-pillar speakers can in fact be very unique as again there is not much to protect speakers from in those locations. In the past a couple of small bars across the spks would suffice as adequate.
Kick panel speakers or doors are a different breed. Due to the fact grills in these areas have to protect feet from destroying the speakers these grills will have to be able to withstand such objects and force.
Subs depending on how they are installed and how the trunk area of the car is presented may or may not need a grill. If your sub is in an environment where you utilize that area on a frequent bases then u will need to protect that sub from such things as hockey bags, grocery bags and home Depot stuff. However if your ride has a trunk that has full blown fiberglass, robotics, custom paint etc then its obvious that this person is never going to use his trunk and the grill can be optional. Just dont try and pull a fast one on the judges....This is not just my rule....it is taught by all IASCA trainers at all IASCA judges trainings.
AND to be honest most grills that the aftermarket speaker companies supply to protect there speakers have very large openings in them. so you have to ask yourself...if its good enough for them...then it must be OK.
