Hmm... Is 20Hz even audible at all? Looking at the equal-loudness contours, it takes 70dB output at 20Hz to have equal loudness as 0dB output at ~1000Hz. To keep up with music playing at ~90dB output, you'd need ~120dB output at 20Hz... And that's with zero distortion...

A friend of mine and contributor here has a pair of 8s in his Accord and the 16hz tone on Planet Krypton is quite present. That's low enuf for me..

On the other end of the spectrum, smaller cones play higher so an 8 should really play higher than a 12 but since most people cut them off under 100hz this is not generally an issue.

And as far as output goes. I always enjoy how 8s are underestimated.

Sure, for directivity reasons... but if the inductance is high, the high frequency response won't be that good in the first place... It's the voice coil/motor that determines if it will play higher freqs well.

is mass not a critical issue in a speakers ablility to play higher freqencies well? if you have a 8" with really high mass will it not directly affect its ability to play higher well?

it's been shown that mass affects the overall amplitude/magnitude of the frequency response, but not the shape of it. i.e, the high and low end rolloff...
