Advantages & Disadvantages of a Tube amplifier vs. a Solid State amplifier.
#42
Sorry to hear that Eddie, but thanks for the post. I know everybody here has unique sound tastes, but it's nice to acknowledge tubes in the mix. If I had had the chance to listen to the butlers before I bought my Audisons, who knows....
I like tube amps.

P.S. The Audison amps rock!

Keith, it wouldn't be worth the space here. Previous system was all STOCK.
I'm relatively new to car audio so my experience with car amplifiers is pretty small. I've owned 2 other car systems in the past, and they weren't anything to write about here.
Home audio amplifiers are a totally different subject.
Sorry,
Adam

Adam,
When your car system is finished, could you please make a comparison between it and your home audio system. Audison VRX with Focal Utopia is an excellent combination if installed correctly, so I am wondering how it sounds in your vehicle.
When listening to music in your car, can you follow the rythm, harmony and melody??? Do you want to turn up the volume because you feel like you need more??? Is their enough space between the instruments??? Are the timbres of the different instruments being reproduced properly??? What about depth and height and width??? Does listening to it make you feel good or happy???
Sorry for all the question. I am asking because I also am thinking of getting Audison VRX. I already have Focal Utopia. I have heard two Focal/Audison cars at a car show last summer and they both sounded great. I'm just curious to know what your system sounds like.

Keith, I'll have no problem sharing that with you when I'm done. In fact, you may have to tell me to shut up, I have a feeling it's going to be pretty sweet.
On a side note, I can remember how Stereophile, and The Absolute Sound used to review product over 10 years ago. None of this test bench mumbo jumbo crap. It was all subjective, and by the time the reviewer finished, the reader had a pretty good idea what the equipment could do.
What I may do is connect my front stage to some home audio amps to get a good comparison. (AKA Bryston on an extension cord.) I don't know how soon that will be though, my car is in pieces.

Adam, that's a great idea...to hook up your Focal Utopia's to your Bryston amp. Then you can compare the differences. Good thinking.
I agree with your comment about audio magazines now using technical mumbo jumbo to base their opinions on audio equipment. This is where UHF (Ultra High Fidelity) Magazine is different from the other publications. They actually listen to music. This magazine has three different state-of-the-art sound rooms and they use a panel of three people (who all work there) to judge an amp or a speaker or a pre-amp or wiring or cd player or record player by actually having a long listen to an entire LP or cd. How they feel emotionally while listening to the music will determine in their minds how to critique the equipment they're testing. They don't care much about the manufacturer's published S/N ratio, THD, power ratings etc. All that matters is the music and if it can be reproduced as life-like as possible. It is also a Canadian publication so I like to support it.
