I am in the market for a new front stage setup.
I'm about 90% sure i'm going to go with us acoustics usx2150 for the amp and i was thinking of cdt audio hd-61cf components but i'm still exploring some other options.

I've been thinking about building a set of components from raw drivers. But i'm not exactly sure where to start. PEI330Ci claims he'll help me with the crossover so i'm not worried about that... but as far as choosing actual drivers... i'm lost.

I want to have fairly tight punchy bass with a nice bright and clear tweeter.

For a midbass i'm looking at the peerless csx 165c
http://www.speakercity.com/Peerless_files/csx165c.shtml

and i have no idea what to do for a tweeter.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated guys...

Thanks,
TJ

wow... that is alot of info to process at 3:20am

i'll have to come back to that tomorow...
I really like the sounds of the LPG tweets though...

Out of all the mids you have on there... what do you think is the best value for the money?

also do you have any of these drivers that your willing to get rid of?

thanks,
tj

I own those peerless speakers.
They arn`t very detailed and they have a nasty
peak around 5k that difficult to filter out.

Not a great as everyone says they are....

Anyway, I am running a set with JL 5.25vr mids
and Boston tweeters with a simple 2nd second order crossover set at 5k

Sounds amazing.. the 5.25`s have more midbass than the peerless`s.. and way easier to install.(those csx`s are huge)
Imo the 5.25 are easier to work with.
On that web site above, he did mentiond that most of the woofers all had nasty peaks in the midrange, wich is common with 6.5`s

5.25 all the way.. just buy quality.

That is a bit of a nasty peak.

I always thought 6.5" drivers provided a more linear output that 5.25" drivers (generally speaking).

I havent had a chance to hear my ID 5.25's yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

maybe i should be looking at building a three way set.

I definetly want the 6.5 in there. But not sure what to do now. I guess i'm not real real worried about the peaks in the upper mid range. I am not used to having much midbass in the car at all so if i have any it will be an improvement.
I have 4" pioneer coaxes in the dash right now that i could leave in... but don't want to have any cancellation.

I think you would be surprised how much midbass you can get out of a 5.25. I was.
Specially if you deaden your doors.
Well worth it.

Why do you wanna make a custom component set?

I want to make a custom component set because i am on a budget and it is cheaper to buy raw drivers. Plus i guess (according to adam) he has the test equipment to build the perfect crossover for whatever i choose.

I am also looking at a couple of DLS kits.
I'm just exploring my options i guess.

Thanks for all the replies though gotten some great info so far.
