I have tried several different set ups like you guys, with both 5.25's and 6.5's. And the current set that I BOUGHT, not put together myself is the best I have heard in a long time, and thats the JL 653 3 way set, I was totally impressed. They just sound awsome. Its all a matter of opinion as far as I see it, but what ever works for others is great I guess

For a tweeter you can try the Lotus (Seas) Reference Tweeter. It can be crossed over very low (it is between 1.7 and 1.9k at 12dB/oct on their component set). It would work well with any of the 7" midbass drivers.

I would go active and use 1 channel per driver. It's the best way IMO. Now for quality it depends on budget.
