SACD and DVD Audio has a higher dynamic and frequency range than cd.

This is just comparing 2ch cd to 2ch SACD/DVD-A. Obviously (to some) there are even greater advantages with multichannel recordings.

 

I think you might be right about dynamic range...

You have to be carefull with DVD-A. Unlike SACD they don't make hybrid DVD-A discs so it will only play in a DVD player. Most DVD-A discs have an additional layer to them which is the DTS layer that is the same quality as the audio on a DVD-V disc which is actually worse than a regular CD. This is so an old DVD player will still play them. The majority of SACD discs are dual layer so they have a DSD layer and the standard PCM.

DVD-A states that its advantage is that it is sampled at 96KHz and is 24 bit rather than the standard CD which is 44.1KHz and 16 bit.

The problem with DVD-A is that it is still PCM which has major flaws in its conversion due to the fact that it is a 2's complament format which isn't great for audio.

SACD doesn't use the PCM format. It is DSD, which is a bitstream. Most recording studios record in DSD and then convert to PCM later so SACD is a purer form of music and skips many process's that PCM has to go through.

I have never listened to either in a car. I have listened to some amazing home stereos and SACD is amazing.

While not a car audio freak (I drive a 94 Escort GT) I am a home audiophile. I have a great HK Receiver and Paradigms. Let me tell you, DVD-A is a world of difference from CD's. I personally buy dvd-a discs whenever I can, and although I am a long time lover of vinyl... Finally digital audio is starting to get close.

Just heard some sacd and dvd-a on a friend of a friends denon/nad/vandersteen 12,000.00 system and i'm very impressed. Heard old r&b and soul from quincy jones that i thought couldn't sound much better...I was wrong, sounds amazing, blew my mind great. Unfortunately, I still believe that the masses won't accept it, because they are not willing to ante up for the level of equipment necessary to fully enjoy this medium. I'm hooked so i'll start collecting from now that way i'll have enough to keep myself happy.
