^ IMO, not always. And the terms "outperform" and "not as good" are pretty vague. Does that mean volume? Durability? Sonic superiority? Size? Weight?
If I take the same (whatever) and platinum-plate it, driving the price up another $1k, does it make it better and perform better? No. It just makes it cost more and be more 'valuable' because it contains a costlier ingredient that is of no real importance.

i only used the terms best and not best because that how it was originally posted, my point is, if you take a set of avi el express component speakers 399.95 retail, and apply them in the most optimum application, and take the avi lx express 799.95 retail, and apply them in their most optimum application, the lx express will easily outperform, and by outperform i mean the sonic characteristics will be superior to that of the less expensive models, this pattern should ring true if the speakers are truly enginereed to be better, now i know that this isnt always the case, but should it not be. this is an interesting post started by a guy who sells high end and at the same time says you can get really great sound without high end gear just pretty good gear, i disagree, you can get great sound with expensive gear, but you can get stunning sound from frighteningly expensive gear, at some point the ever present tradeoff has to take place, the limitations of great gear will show sooner than that of the "best" gear, and i can hear the diffrence between amps too, hahaha lol
^ Interesting. I just think the line gets easily lost between where the extra cost means improved performance or relavant gain and needless excess. I figure you can get easily get 90% of the performance for 50% of the cost of frighteningly expenstive gear. Is less than 10% worth 50% more in cost? To some yes. Not me [img]smile.gif[/img]

i would partially agree with the exception of the ratio, im not sure that you can get 90% of the performance for 50% of the cost, i use the avi as an example because im familiar with them, there is now way, if both applied properly, that the el express is 90% of the lx express for half the money, now having said that, i dont think this is always the case, in fact it is probobly the exception unfortunatly [img]graemlins/headbang.gif[/img] [img]graemlins/headbang.gif[/img]

True, but let's take the Alpine F#1 drivers, which I hear are rebadged Seas speakers at more than double the cost. Or a Denon Z1 compared to an R1. Or the Canton set I have for sale at $399 compared to a Polykev set at $1000+ [img]tongue.gif[/img] But that set originally sold for $1200+ so I digress....

the major cost dofference in the f#1 status components is the crossovers, they are the most versatile and comprehensive x-overs ive ever seen, and they arent rebadged seas, they are custom designed and built by scanspeak, they use a propietary alpine cast basket, and so on, the tweeter is a cutom built tweeter off the revalator platform, but built to alpine usa specification, im not familiar, aka never used personally) with the denon stuff, but i think application is more important to the over all system with speakers more so than the source, if you have never heard the f#1 staus gear, we are fortunate enough to sell it, you are really missing a truly amazing set of speakers, worth every penny, i think, and that all that matters, so there, hahahah

I know of more than a few components sets I really like that cost $200-$400 retail.

Ahh right, Scanspeak. Yeah I'd like to demo that stuff and see what the hype is about. That's the hard part IMO about demoing either high end home or car stuff: finding a shop that will just chill out and let you relax and listen.

mike bisson, your silly, you crazy ****, do you really like them, or really like the value of them, come on man i know that you know that i know that you know that, put the wallet aside, ifn you weree setting out to build your own car, to sound as good as you thought you could build it, you would use the best speakers you had access to
