Fourplay - the best of Fourplay.

4 amazing Jazz musicians, the guitar parts are strong and clear, and at times the snare drum hits can be so sharp that they will make you flinch at high volume.

CD Title: Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4.
Label: PHILIPS (475 6316).
Ensemble: Wiener Philharmoniker.
Conductor: Valery Gergiev.

As stated by the conductor, Valery Gergiev......"I think Tchaikovsky was always ready for immortality, and with his final three symphonies, he secured his place in the pantheon of great composers. For me there isn't one single element that dominates Tchaikovsky's symphonic output - whether melody, rhytthm or drama - but what makes his work so compelling is that it touches both the professional musician and the general public, who react immediatley and very honestly to the power of his music."

In my personal opinion, what makes Tchaikovsky's music so powerful is its sadness and melancholy. Tchaikovsky, for most of his life was a very depressed individual, who spoke of his depression and sadness through his musical output. His symphonies are sheer power and drama.

Valery Gergiev finds that making a live recording rather than a studio recording better conveys the thoughts of Tchaikovsky. As Gergiev puts it........"Maiking a live recording has its own rewards: of course, sometimes you might wish for the comfort of a quiet studio, with plenty of time. But when recording live we go for energy, we go for excitement. And still, hopefully, we go for good musical quality."

This cd was recorded in Vienna, Austria, October 17-21, 2002.

CD Title: Leila Josefowicz.
Label: PHILIPS (462 5922).
Ensemble: Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal.
Conductor: Charles Dutoit.
Violinist: Leila Josefowicz.

On this beautifully recorded compact disc, the very lovely violinist, Leila Josefowicz, takes on the challenges of performing Segei Prokofiev's (1891-1953) violin concerto no. 1 in D major, opus 19. She also performs Peter Tchaikovsky's (1840-1893) violin concerto named Serenade Melancolique, opus 26. And finally, she does Segei Prokofiev's violin concerto no.2 in G minor, opus 63.

She performs with the utmost refinement. The Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal along with conductor Charles Dutoit put on a magnificent performance of their own. The combination of Leila on violin and this wonderful orchestra provide for an amazing compact disc of outstanding sound quality. This disc was recorded in a studio setting in a city just outside of Montreal, May 20-21, 1999.

CD Title: Tchaikovsky, Symphony No.5.
Label: PHILIPS (4756718).
Ensemble: Weiner Philharmoniker.
Conductor: Valery Gergiev.

In this, his 5th symphony, Peter Tchaikovsky wonders about his destiny and if he is capable of controlling it or changing it. He ponders on the idea that maybe destiny is fixed and cannot be changed or maybe it can be changed, but, he is not sure of any of these philosophical ideas. His unsureness of his own destiny prompts him to write the symphony no.5. There are four movements totalling about 46 minutes.

Once again, the conductor, Valery Gergiev has decided to use a live recording for this cd. This live compact disc is very nicely recorded. You can hear the distant and occasional coughs and other sounds from the audience. You can also hear the ambience of the concert hall where it was recorded. It makes me feel as though I am at the concert hall. Nicely done.

This live recording was done in Salzburg, Austria during July 1998.

CD Title: Infernal Violins.
Ensemble: La Pieta.
Label: Analekta (AN 28723).
Solo Violin: Angele Dubeau.

This cd is aptly named "Infernal Violins" because all of the music is about the Devil. Alot of music has been written about the Devil and alot of it has been done using the violin. In old folklore, the violin was considered to be the Devil's choice of musical instrument.

On this exquisitely recorded compact disc, we get sonatas from the likes of composers such as :

Camille Saint Saens(1835-1921),
Jacques Offenbach(1816-1860),
Francois Dompierre(1943-???),
Giusepppe Tartini(1692-1770),
Franz Liszt(1811-1886),
Nicolo Paganini(1782-1840),
Luigi Boccherini(1743-1805),
Ennio Morricone(1928-???).

We also get music transcribed for violin and strings from the Rolling Stones....their songs, Paint it Black/Sympathy for the Devil.

The ensemble, La Pieta, was put together by ace violinist Angele Dubeau who is living in Montreal. This ensemble, including Angele Dubeau, consists of twelve extraordinarily talented Canadian women musicians. This is an almost entirely string ensemble. I say "almost" because a piano is also inculded within this string ensemble. The ensemble has been together since 1997 with all the original members still there. Their "togetherness" certainly shines through on this cd plus all their other cd's which they have recorded and have won awards for.

The recorded sound quality is phenomenal as this cd was recorded, mastered and edited in 24 bit.

There is also a DVD included which highlights:
- Live concert excerpts,
- Video clips,
- Previously unreleased material.

Recording took place at the Eglise Saint-Augustin de Mirabel (near Montreal), June 20-22, 2000.

CD Title: Carmina Burana.
Composer: Carl Orff.
Ensemble: Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chorus.
Soprano: Hei-Kyung Hong.
Tenor: Stanford Olson.
Baritone: Earle Patriarco.
Conductor: Donald Runnicles.
Label: TELARC (CD-80575).

The opera, Carmina Burana, was completed by German born composer Carl Orff (1895-1982) in 1936. The poems on which Carmina Burana is based were written by 13th century clerics who were rather undisciplined and always lusting after women. Thus, their poems also reflected the lust which they experienced in their lives.

So, ofcourse, this opera is all about lust and love. Carl Orff was very interested in primal rhythms and melodies, which have been heavily incorporated into this opera.

The recorded sound quality of this cd is excellent. The dynamic range is very wide and there is no obvious microphone spotlighting. There isn't any one section of the orchestra which has been recorded more strongly than another section. Every section and part seems to have equal recognition and participation. Because the dynamic range is so wide, I found that I had to turn up the volume by 4dB in order to feel sonic and emotional impact. I usually listen to my music with my unit set at -21dB. With this recording, I turned up the volume to -17dB in order to realize the sonic benefits of this fine recording. Once set to this louder volume level, everything just fell into place and the results were outstanding. Sonic impact and emotional impact were all there and in full force.

Recorded in Symphony Hall, Atlanta Georgia, Nov.4-5, 2000.

There is some technical information which has been printed in the liner notes of this cd package. I thought it was very interesting to read. So, here is the technical information, which I am copying word for word from the notes. I hope you find it interesting to read as well:

CD Title: SIBELIUS Violin Concerto,
SINDING Violin Concerto No. 1

Ensemble: Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra
Violin: Henning Kraggerud
Conductor: Bjarte Engeset
Label: NAXOS (8.557266)

Two beautiful violin concertos have been softly recorded on this compact disc. The first is that composed by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957). It is in 3 movements;

1. Allegro moderato
2. Adagio di molto
3. Allegro ma mon tanto

The second violin concerto has rarely been heard in the recorded industry. Its composer, Christian Sinding (1856-1941) of Norway wrote this piece in 1898. It is in 3 movements;

1. Allegro energico
2. Andante
3. Allegro giocoso

The entire cd has been recorded very softly and you need to turn up the volume in order to appreciate the virtuosity of the violinist, Henning Kraggerud, and the symphony orchestra.
