Big sealed box = fairly low power handling, extended low frequency response, somewhat lower output. Hmmmm everything about them is 'low', some good, some bad.

Low driver control / higher driver excursion
Low output
Theoretically lower frequency response

Aside from the obvious space advantage that IB has, the characteristics above have never made me a fan of it.

I've built at lest half a dozen IB systems for people. Some worked better than others but none of them made me say wow.

No it's NOT a big ole seal box. It's a big ole crappy leakie box if anything. Unless you can fibreglass your trunk tight, it's not a sealed box. And I'm talking about the lid as well. I've heard IB fart out of the lid gasket........... and that's assuming you've sealed up everything on the inside, including that nice little trunk ventilation flap. It's not true free-air.......... but it's no box either.

IB is very good for SQ. You just need the right driver. BTW, sealing the front wave from the back can be WAAAAAY more work then building a box............ assuming you are looking for perfection.

A tuned AP mat is my ultimate favourite enclosure design for SQ.

I'm not sure it's necessarily a good thing to do in cars with air bags also. From the years of tech classes and seminars I've been to(back when I was an automotive technician), it was explained many times over that you should never block any of those vents. When that bag goes off, that pressure has to go somewhere...not into you hopefully. I think that by sealing off the trunk so tightly, you will also decrease the interior volume of the car. Air bags are designed for specific volumes in which to expand, this again could result in damage to your body internally, auditory system and even eyes. If it's done, I would probably look for some way to connect the vent in the trunk to the passenger compartment(via a hose or pipe) and maybe even expanding the vent to compensate for the loss of interior volume. Anyway, just some thoughts.

Also: what does it do when you're rear ended? having a 1/2" piece of aluminum, or even a piece of 3/4 MDF in the rear deck instead of a crumple-zone designed piece of sheet metal could decapitate anyone in the rear deck, including any children who are there... so, IB subs would likely kill your kids if you got rear ended... it'd have to make tweeters sound like 15's to even come close to compensating for that factor.

Yeah I left out the part that a trunk makes for a shitty enclosure.. And I cannot agree more that the RIGHT driver needs to be used - not all drivers are equal in IB land.

I cannot support the SQ thing though. Yep, lots of competitors use it and yep many of them are successful but it has never really impressed me.

I heard an AP-loaded IB system for the first time this summer and I was quite impressed with it. It was an SQ-focused system albeit using a pair of 15s on an under-rated 700watt class A/B amp. It was deep and powerful at higher volumes though. I quite liked it. Although, if you are using a pair of 15s and can't get deep and powerful, then something's wrong lol

I'm no expert, but I hope the crumple zone isn't in the rear deck. I think for the most part the crumple zone is in the fenders and the underside of the uni-body on the rear of the car. If it's in the rear deck, that means it's already blown out your rear window and transmiting into the roof line.......... down the side of your car....... etc. What about guys with hatch backs and sub boxes???

Although I do agree that anything fastened on the interior of the car should be solid enough such that you can grab onto it and rock the vehicle without in coming off in your hand. Nothing like an A-pillar tweeter coming loose and bullet-ing through through your skull........... exploding your brain guts out all over the vehicle............ and kick panels slicing your feet off.......... no wait a minute........... childrens feet off........ homeless children with no parents and no food............ that live in the rain.......... in a cardboard box.
