the drama sassmaster, i just about cried reading your post lol. ib isnt for everyone, but if massive output isnt needed but very linear deep bass is what you want, ib can work very well, ported and sealed boxes are good for 1 thing, your midrange/midbass
It comes down to opinion unfortunately so nobody wins.

So I got my new CVR15's delivered last night. They look impresive. Kicker recommended against using them free-air like i wanted to. I emailed tech support again and they recommend a 2.5 sealed box for best SQ. Now i'm trying to figure out how to build in the box and still fit in the amps, caps, etc.

So I finally got the CVR 15's pumpin! Its amazing. I went with the free-air, that was the original plan. Goes much deeper bass than my pioneer 12's did.
It took some doin to seal the rear deck, the new car seems to be made out of cheese. Holes everwhere! But i got it done. And it took some modifyn to make them fit... I coulda swore that opening was bigger in the showroom...
They're behind the back seat. I did 2 layer laminated MDF, upolstered with fake black leather. Now i'm going to extend the seat locks so it stays open a few inches.
Doesn't take much to get really loud. Better keep the windows down.

Right now I am using 1 JL 13W7 in IB...at only 400 Watts Rms into it it can move alot of air inside the cabin...although my trunk is not fully sealed yet...it still gets loud for 1 Sub...so far I am impressed with my IB set-up...and people should not be discouraged if they want to save on trunk space...I plan on adding another W7 down the road...and completely sealing the rear deck with MDF top and bottom...this should re-inforce it as well as provide a dead seal...I also plan on lining my trunk with closed cell foam to dry the sound of the subs...this should give me the SQL I'm looking for. As what I've heard before on IB set-ups...they sound better w hen you crank them loud...as this increases the damping of the subs relative to the rear-wave pushing on them.

I'm going to install them into my car yet I'm still debating it.
