Front speaker question

Hey everyone, first post and looking for some advice on some new front speakers. I have a 2001 integra, so i'll need 6.5" speakers.

My current setup includes an Alpine 9857 deck (bought it mostly for the ipod interface, but the sound quality i think is pretty good as well), and stock speakers.

I listen to mostly metal, and some rock, and I find that for most rock the sound is great, but for any type of fast metal, it sounds pretty bad. By bad I mean that it's hard to recognize the different instruments from each other (and I know it's not the recording because I listened to it through my headphones and it sounds great). So this is why I'm looking for some new speakers (and maybe an amp if necessary).

I went by East Hamilton Radio this weekend to look at some speakers. I was looking at the Alpine Type X (or Type R)... tried the Type X and thought it sounded pretty good, but then the sales guy recommended the Hertz hsk 165. Tried those out too and also sounded really good... I think maybe a little better, but couldnt really tell exactly since they were running through different decks and different amps. I've never heard of Hertz before talking to him, but in his opinion they were much better... so I just wanted to ask you guys what you think of the Hertz speakers, and how they compare to the Alpine's... or if you guys have any recommendations for the music I listen to I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

I didn't see if you were using an amp or not to power the speakers.........if not, I think you'll find that if you did the same comparison the Hertz speakers would smoke the Alpine speakers.

Hertz are very efficient..........which means they need less power to give the same amount of db output.

The HSK165 Components are 92db efficient........I dont know what the Alpines are, but I'd guess around 89 or 90db. That means that to play at the same level of volume as the Hertz speakers..........you would need almost double the power.......to be the same.

Plus at the price the HSK165 are at...........!! Smoking !! And they sound killer for that $$ amount.

Let your ears decide though..........its your car and your $$$.

I'd suggest you take some time and go listen to more then just those two brands.

A good speaker will sound good no matter what your musical taste is......sure, some with bring out subtle nuances that other speakers dont on certain types of music. But for the most part........if the speaker is good at doing its job.....you could listen to THRASH METAL and Classical and they should both sound good.

Take YOUR music to the store and listen to it.........since thats what you'll be playing on your speakers. Not the salesmans choice of music that brings out the best in the speakers.

As far as spending all summer trying out as many speakers as you possibly can.........find a set that is in your price range and ones that sound good to you.

Also, if your not getting an amp right away........make sure that the speakers you buy will handle the power of the amp.........most good speakers will have no problem at all.

really..........i disagree,if that were true we would all run the same speaker. You have to take into consideration where you are going to mount the speakers, how you mount them, how they play on and off axis.I mean a set ob Be Focals sound great, but would be a tad harsh playing megadeath.imop

^^I don't think he's talking about ultra SQ. I think he's saying that a good speaker should be able to sound good (not necessarily amazing) with any type of music for the most part. For this level of car audio system (very little or no custom placement, limited signal processing, and mostly compressed music via IPOD), virtually any good brand should be capable of sounding good. The rest is up to personal choice as to which sounds best to you, as we are all aware that speakers do colour the sound and add their own flavours. Some flavours being better than others, IMHO!!

Yeah I'm not sure I agree with the statement that if a speaker is of good quality then it will sound good with any type of music. I havent spent that much time looking at car speakers, but when i went headphone shopping some headphone were just terrible for certain types of music while other were great (and I'm not just talking about subtle difference).

You guys are right in that I have to go listen to more speakers, it's just that there's so many brands out there I was hoping that there would be someone here with similar musical taste that could give me some speaker recommendations (ie. what speakers they are using)... this would at least give me a starting point.

Thanks.

Appreciate the input, but I'm still new to car audio so just wondering if you could be a little more specific of what I would need to setup... if this has been covered before, I apologize... maybe someone could provide me with a link of how to properly setup the car?

Thanks.
