I'm not a big sq guy.. but i dont think flat RTA is the way to go for the best sound..

 

^ Would that depend more or less on the judge that's critiquing the system? Whether or not he likes a little Fletcher-Munson action happening or not, that is.

Part of the whole SQ competition is the RTA portion where you want as flat a response as possible. At least not have any major deviations between frequencies. But you will have a completely different setting for your sq portion. This is where a 1/3 octave eq comes in handy, because you have sooo much control.

And Chaxton, it "shouldn't" matter what judge listenes to your system, they should all be listening for the same things. ^^^no, i'm just oldschool when it comes to SQ. we all used to compete with the RTA, and your right sometimes it isn't the sound i might be looking for to suit my tastes. however a good judge should be able to determine that there are no aprecciable diff between frequencies.

Don't listen to people who try and tell you, you have to spend alot of money. You can buy a pair of seps for $200.00, a 4 ch amp for $500.00, CD player for $250.00 and a 12 inch sub for $149.99. And you can compete with the best of them. With a good install, I mean clean and well mounted, you can do wonders. There's guy a with 4 stock speakers, a stock cd player with a 12. He has one of the highest sound quality scores out there. Only listen to the guys who have bin there done that. Listen only to true competitors, not a geek with an opinion, who doesn't compete and hides behind a computer...

Amen to that. The Orion is awesome because you can save settings and try other presets easily. But it is more complicated then just using sliders like I do. EQT's are a very nice piece, and can be purhased used cheap on this board or ebay. PPI's does not have seperate left/right controls, which is essential, I think, for a hardcore SQ system. But it is easy to bring the controls into the vehicle to adjust. I totally recommend the Rane EQ's I have, but who can afford to buy them new?

 

Well i did it. I have enter the point of no return. I picked up a pair of Crossfire CFQ 31M Rack mount 1/3 octave eq's. Nice price too i paid 100USD shipped for the two. Next on the list is a good set of comps. What does everyone use and what is pretty good? I have about 100W RMS to feed them. Any suggestions?
