HU effect

I've been reading a lot of posts around here, and can conclude that people really think that a head unit has that big of a differnce on SQ.
I jsut wanna start a thread here so I can read everyones opinions on this, so really, does a "better" sq hu really make that much difference?

It made a difference for me. I had gone from a single pre-out Pioneer DEH-345 to an Alpine CDA-7977. Clarity and loudness improved as well as noise floor...basically less hiss with CD playback.
Afterwards, I went from the 7977 to my current 7949, and noticed a further improvement. Instruments seemed to come out better, smoother, crisper, more detail, better stereo feel (I'm guessing image improvement). Cake never sounded so great on my system.
Between deck changes, there was no other change in the gear I had currently.

George thinks that the difference between a $200 cd player and a $900 CD player is pretty much impossible to hear. Now the difference between some of the greatest CD players every made and everything else is noticible but sometimes is not worth the added cost of getting one of these CD players. George feels that some exceptions are items like the Alpine 7909, Clarion 9255, Nak CD700, Mac 406, Alpine 7990, any of the new Denons, Sony C-90, C910. George thinks any one of these can make a notibible difference in the system.

George would like to add that yes you will hear differences in stuff like noise floor, output (higher voltage deck) and other items, but the actual definition, tonal, imaging, staging differences will be so small if any at all that it really comes down to cosmetics and features in the purchase of todays head units.

Well I'm basically talking about say a 300 dollar Panasonic, to a $300 dollar Alpine with similar features. Seems everyone goes on and says how it makes so much of a diff, I'm just curious why.
