well lets see take oh say a 159.00 audiovox c.d. player and compare to a 1000.00 alpine c.d. player now compare both in a 85 impala. now we are doing "real world" tests so START the car and DRIVE the vehicle at posted speeds hell if its nice out roll the window down. Now tell me you here a difference. get the picture. unless you listen to pink floyds dark side of the moon in your garage with the garage door closed at 3am without the car running, prety hard to hear the differences on c.d. players. where the difference comes in is in output voltage. thats where a apparent difference will be heard but probalby not in the sq forum. at my shop here i have an occelliscope and test every deck that i get my hands on and the output on almost every deck clips way beyond the limit of human hearing. you dont have to believe me but the machine dont lie.

^ Pardon me quart man, I don’t mean to be rude but what the hay
Are you saying all that matters is output voltage?
Your real world conditions and those who want to hear what’s on the CD differ greatly. Sometimes running down the road enjoying the fresh air and sunshine is great other days (hot, cold, wet) listening might be more enjoyable. I will agree that with the windows down cruising while at the speed limit music is more of a background or a mood enhancer. This has not been the norm this calendar year for most....
What X and Y axis are you referring to clipping beyond the limits of human hearing?

sorry about not being clear on the subject. by output voltage i meant that people associate sound quality with amplitude, so amp a plays music at 110 db and amp b plays music at 112 db but the music signal has been keep absolutely the same. ask the person listening, which one sounds better and every time he will pick amp b. this was demonstrated to me by richard clark and david navone at one of there seminars. made me and a ton of other so called audiophiles feel pretty dumb!! and my point about driving is that road noise in any moving vehicle will outweigh the sonic benifits of any deck. but there certainly are some decks that sound better that others but only on the test bench, now you have to decide weather or not you want to buy that alpine 7909 or sony cdxc910 or maybe just settle for a 299.00 deck. sorry for the confusion.

Quart the fly in that ointment is you can turn up amp A so it can be accurately compared (level matched) to amp B (I thought this was about HU). I agree level matching is important and it will persuade the listener which actually sounds better. When someone pops out an old HU (or a factory unit) and slams in his first Alpine what does he notice? In my case (and recently supaflys case) was an improvement in articulation (supafly felt it was a tighter bass) and with older Alpine gear there was a bump up in the warmth region of the bass (125-500 Hz) too. I believe (this is opinion) that a higher amplitude will give an overall impression of superiority (everything is better HF, bass, depth, etc.).

On the similar but unrelated item I thought you were saying, my HU puts out 3v, the gains on my amps are way down (minimum on my sub amp) so I don’t see how a higher output has any affect in SQ other than causing hearing damage faster.
