HU & PROC level matching conundrum - HeLP

System consists of a (HU) Eclispe CD 7100 (8volt pre-out), (PROC) Rockford 3sixty.2 recently installed Gains not touched on either front or sub amps.

My FRONT ONLY levels will not balance out for some reason! When I set the proc with the supplied RF 'CD' and ripped RF 'CD' on my iPOD at 320k. I get clippng lights at around 90% full volume (volume 65) - CD is Black Eye Peas - song: Don't Funk with my heart! I go back to the RF disc and ipod and there is NO clipping lights? Volume is 0 to 80 - my reference setting is 70. I've had it set to this level for a year before the RF piece and is 100% clean!

My levels between the CDP and iPOD are controlled through the SVC controls in the deck - this allows me to reduce the gain of the CDP to match the lower output level of the iPOD. CDP is set at -5db - iPOD is set a 0. All gains are set to factory defaults (0db), xover (off), TA(off), and eq is FLAT. Loudness, Bass, Treb are disabled.

The only setting that is at max is the NF(nonading) is set to +6(could this be clipping in the deck?????) I control the sub volume with the RF dial sub control.

When playing back music it sounds distorted around the 60 volume mark!
The levels in the RF software is -3....my guess is to drop the output levels to -10. or the Rockford 3sixty.2 cannot take the 8volt preout ?

Any thoughts?

Julian

From what I remember, many analog clip detectors look for square waves in the music occuring a certain percentage of the time. I've seen songs that have alot of clipped signal trip out clip indicators at nowhere near an actual clipped output.

Basically what I'm saying is you can have a clipped source signal activating clip detection circuitry before you have hit your maximum output voltage on your head unit, and the output itself has not generated the clipped signal, but rather your source music.

Am I making sense?

yep makes sense - i'll drop the gain a 1/4 just to be safe!!

This happened to me when I was using a AudioControl line driver & EQL - setup the same way with the same HU. The overload lights would flash once in a while - on certain music.

I know it's not the deck and my volume is perfect at 70/80 - yes I'm aware it's more then 75% - but 56/80 introduces hiss in the mix! Apparently I'm not the only one! Another CD7100 owner has his system set to 75/80 with great results! plus like having a little more head room on older recorded material 74/80 is the highest I'll go.

I still have to setup a few other cd's to make sure it's just set up right!

Thanks Macguyver - anyone else!

Ok initially I used the Rockford Setup disc (track 1) and set the levels accordingly - Once I went to play a loud CD I had to bring the gains down a 1/4 more so no clipping occurs! NF on the deck is set to 0 - I'm going to adjust the sub amp accordingly!

Is there another way of setting this up?

Yes it accepts 8volt in!

Update - Levels are set up and the 3sixty.2 now makes light crackling noises now. It cannot be heard during music program! The PROC isn't amplifying it. If I mute my HU and the output in the RF software I can hear it! I called tech support and it looks like I'm SOL for world finals! I'll double check wiring and re-post results!

update 2 noise is gone - some how bleeding though my Streetwires ZN07s??

Question:
I spoke to a tech at RF and he stated that the RF processor is 100% clean if the outputs are set to 0db??

Output Levels are at /-5db front / mute rear / mute center / 0db sub /

Can anyone confirm???

Also I contacted Eclipse Tech suport and they stated that keeping my NF set to +6 is 100% clean on my CD7100 - as long as I don't clip the RF processor.

I ran Bass Mechanix, 40hz one at 0db, and Chevelle's - Song - Comfortable Liar and it's the only track that clipped the RF signal - ever so slightly!

Any other suggestions?

Thanks
