mono amps for stereo bass?

"Bass is heard in mono, no matter what you do to it..."
i'm not refuting this, but if it is the case why do some decks(like my 7200mkII) give you the choice of putting your bass phase settings in Mono or Stereo format, if it is not possible? is it a setting to deal with either a mono amp running your sub or a 2/4 ch. running it?

If you are running them in stereo being able to reverse the phase on one side at a time is pointless unless you are planning on demo'ing what out-of-phase speakers sound like....... I'd be surprised if Eclipse would put that option in the top of line deck, the potential for complaints about "my bass sounds crappy and I don't know why" problems is huge.....
Unless I'm mis-reading what you're wrote......correct me if I am.....

ok here it is from the online manual...Non-fader settings (Non-F Setting)
Non-fader phase (Phase)
The merging of sound between the front and rear speakers and the woofer can be improved by selecting the phase. Switch the phase to a phase which lets the speakers combine without any disharmony.
Non-Fader Output (Output)
Non-Fader Output can be stereo or mono. Select the method that matches the output method for the sub-woofer system that is connected to the main unit.
1Press the [SELECT] (Up/Down) button to select NF Setting.
2Press the [ENTER] button.
The non-fader setting mode is activated.
Non-fader phase settings (Phase)
1Press the [SELECT] (Up) button to select Phase.
2Press the [SELECT] (Right/Left) button to select Reverse or Normal.
Right:
Reverse
Left:
Normal
Non-Fader Output settings (Output)
1Press the [SELECT] (Down) button to select Output.
2Press the [SELECT] (Right/Left) button to select Monaural or Stereo.
Right:
Monaural
Left:
Stereo
Does that help BRG?

lots of us ran stereo subs prior to bridging amps to mono became common place. The bass was good then as it is now. Unfortunately it's hard to compare the two styles from then and now as so much has changed in terms of sub efficiency, power handling and amp output. I remember Madonna's vogue sounding damn good back in the day with my 2 12" blue thunders and a punch 150 in stereo(didn't know what bridging was at the time)...I later bridged it to mono and never looked back, so it must have sounded pretty good, but probably louder due to the extra power.
