need some 6.5" speakers, dunno what to get
Looking at the Alpine SPS-600's. any opinions on these??? sellin for 100 bucks at bestbuy right now so was thinking of picking them up.
what i really want to know is, is there anything that sounds better than costs the same or less???. don't wanna spend more than $100, but want the best sound possible for it. Heard good things about the infinity reference series. Perhaps are the 6022si??
Primarlily listening to Hip hop, R&B, some occasional rock and some heavy vocal stuff.
2x10" woofers in the trunk, stock 6x9's in the rear.
Thanks

Not too many speakers can sound as bad as Alpine type s, or Infinity Ref. For the price RSD is selling, not many speakers can touch them.

I know this is a fairly old thread and hasn't gotten any response for awhile. but just to chip in my 2 cent. I've tried the Energy 6.5" convertible component, 6x9 infinity reference, 6.5 infinity reference component, and I now have a pair of 6.5 infinity kappa component, and a pair of 6x9 infinity kappa coax waiting to be tested.
I bought the Energy because of the great reviews from FS, and great remarks from this thread. To my dismay...it sounded horrible. Very muddy mids and very hollow sounding. Initially I thought it was my source, and I swapped it with something else and it still sounded horrible. I returned it and bought the infinity 6x8 ref coax and wow, what a difference. However, the tweeters are mounted at the bottom, which means I'd need to get another pair of tweeters. The infinity 6x9s are pretty bright sounding, and if you set the tweeter to -3db, it will sound very hollow. I returned it because the midrange sounded weird and it didn't fit my door perfectly. I then bought the 6.5 components, and these sounded even better. Not as much bass as the 6x9 but the vocal is more natural. However, I didn't like the bass coming out of it as it shrouds the vocals a little. I am still hunting for a pair of 6.5s and haven't had the chance to install these kappas yet.
I also tested some focals. I think it has a lusher midrange and less hollow/honky sounding, but the mid bass doesn't seem to be as dynamic as the infinity ref, and the tweeters aren't as bright. In fact, the tweeters sounded very smooth, but IME, getting the perfect treble out of tweeters like that would be more difficult than brighter tweeters since position would need to be more precise (leveled to ears). I find that with brighter tweeter, I could position it in certain way so that the brightness can be masked off.

Hey, I picked up a set of Alpine 600 components a little over a week ago for $99 at 2001 audio clearance center. You have to haggle a little but they will give them to you for $99. They usually sell for $139 at 2001 and $157 at Best buy. I don't know if you gave these speakers a listen yet but they sound great and for the money can't be beat. Another option are the JBL 607 components at $150 taxes in. If your interested I can let you know where to get them.
