Hi. Just joined up minutes ago. Looks like a good forum. I am going get a system going in my car and I mainly want it to sound good with some spl. Generally I'll be listening to hip-hop and rock. But, my tastes swing out to classical, country and blues too.

I own an '89 Buick Park Avenue. I have an Alpine 9815 Headunit and 5.25" stock speakers up front and stock 6x9's in the back. I have been told by a knowledgeable installer that without much trouble 6.5" speakers can be installed in place of the 5.25" in front.

Now I want my system to sound good, but go as cheap as possible while still sounding great. I also have no way to order off the internet so only local stores are my option, but I can list what I can get and at what prices.

One guy told me that the best sounding setup would be to install 6.5" comps in front that run off 75-100 watts rms so I would have to amp them. Then take out the rear 6x9's so some more sound and pressure will enter the car from the trunk through the 6x9 holes.

Another guy told me just to switch out the 2 sets of speakers with decent speakers and run them off my deck since it is a V-drive and should put out about 25rms x4. Only problem with that is the aftermarket speakers probably would not put out optimally because they would be underpowered. BAH.

Anyway, this is what I'm looking at doing and the order I will do it in.

For a cheap, but nice sounding sub I am pretty set on going with a 12" Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1 in a 1cf sealed box. For an amp I am looking at a Planet Audio amp that supposed to run 600-650watt rms at 2 ohms. I have been told that the perfect is good to go at 500 rms when sealed so since the 600-650 is most likely gonna be abit less since I probably will be more likely at 12.5v rather than 14.4v it should be all good. I have read alot of reviews that say this amount of power is no problem so long as I don't cause clipping. My Alpine goes to 34 on the volume, but I never go higher than 21-22. I'm not trying to be heard from 2 blocks away.

So getting the sub in is my first goal.

Then I'll handle the speakers inside.

What do you guy's think? Should I install 6.5" comps in front and amp them or just swap out the stock speakers in front and back and run them off the deck like they are right now?

For 6.5" comps I can get Focal's and JL audio's.

For coaxial's I can get JBL GTO series, Memphis M series and Infinity Reference.

These are what I have to work with.

Opinions and advice are much appreciated. And if you read through this whole long-winded post, thank you.

if you want cheap your not going to get good, if you want good its not going to be cheap.

ok that said, the 9815 with vdrive is a very decent HU for just starting off i would probably ditch the rear speakers unless you really care about your passengers and then throw a set of semi-decent coaxials upfront and then throw a sub in. now with the alpine here is a crucial thing you need to do if you want it to sound good. run atleast a 12ga fused line from the battery to the constant lead on the deck. you will be pretty amazed with the sound from it. i cant remember if the 9815 has 3 way mode in it but if it does you can even use that to run a set of compoenets off of the deck power. i did that with a 9835 with an upgraded constant lead and it sounded pretty damn good and low to medium-hi volumes. i was very impressed with it. soo hope that helped somehow.

So basically you agree that rear fill is not necessary? I rarely have passengers. This is for my listening pleasure totally.

When I had the HU installed they installed it just like you said. I also have an optima red top battery.

Alot of knowledgeable people have told me a good set of 6.5" comps or coaxials will do the job and that the 6x9's aren't necessary.

My car sounds alot better than most stock stereo's I hear and it probably has alot to do with the HU.

For 6.5" comps I'm looking at JL audio TR650-csi and to run them a JL E2150 2-channel amp.

That combined with a sealed 12" Infinity Kappa Perfect should sound pretty good and not break the bank too bad I think.

yeah rear fill is ok sometimes but i've been running without for about a year now and dont miss it at all. if saving money is a big concern just run the speakers off the deck the vdrive on the deck will suprise you. and if you dont like it then buy the amp later. but why make it more complicated if you dont have to.

Thanks man. That's what I'll do. After I get the sub installed Il do the comps first off the deck and if that doesn't make me happy enough I'll amp them. I'll keep the 6x9's until I get the comps in though.

Both the CDA9815 and CDA9813 can both do 3 way mode. Also my advice to this guy would be to get in touch with regalone on the board he has had has much success with his buick and he runs the same deck as you.

Nice HU!

I agree that you should just forget about the 6x9's and do a nice 6.5 comp set up front, but if you have the money, do not hesitiate to amp the comp set from the beginning. If you are out for SQ, that's what you will end up doing anyways. It'll sound good off deck power, but a clean amp will make a significant difference, IMO.

if price is an option why not try buying second hand
if you buy old quality gear you can often put together a killer system for peanuts

for example the old rockford audiophile subwoofers
i still rate these even though there old and such they still play music better than most subwoofers on the market today the only two woofers id have instead of these would be the
phase linear aliante and the velodyne servo controlled sub
those old rockford woofers can be picked up for nothing on the likes of ebay
