Try the woofers sealed, if output is lacking, perhaps someone could calculate what ports that box would need.

That sealed box would end up being too small to effectively port anyways...

But I do agree, try a sealed box, and a ported box, and see which one gives 'you' better results. for what it will cost you to build one of each; (if you have the means to build them yourself) it's a small price to pay to hear the difference. all the opinions anyone on this site can give you, (even though top notch) can't replace your own testing, in my opinion..

regards, Mark

I'm running sealed and it sounds great, but to clarify for myself does a ported box improve SQ and increase frequency range or does it just allow for deeper and louder?

example is it great 35hz-80hz vs good 18hz-80hz?
or is it great 35hz-80hz vs excellent 18hz-80hz?

(frequencies are just examples and not pulled from any actual aplication)

It is true that porting the box will increase low frequency extension. This could be 6dB plus depending on the situation. However, any frequencies below the tuning frequency will be inferior to a sealed equivalent.

Depending on the design of a ported box, it might totally screw up your sq side of things. If done properly, it will "almost" be as good in sq as sealed, depending on how picky you are.

It generally porting increases the output near the tuning frequency. As most people tune in mid 30ies, this gives them more output in that area, ie more low end.

Also what StickyFingaz is saying is true.
For example take a look at the graph in this pdf file
http://www./pdf/IDMAX12-V3-D4-Spec.pdf
It shows you the response of a sub in a particular car in a particular box.
Ported drops off faster after the tuning freq, whereas sealed isn't as rapid.
It's all of course is going to be different for each car, but you can get a general idea of how things go.
I also recommend that you download a copy of WinISD pro and try playing with any woofer and box configurations, it will probably answer all your questions. At least in theory.

I think that sums it up nicely. Since my system is loud enough for me at the moment building a ported box would only degrade my overall SQ for listening to music.

Thanks.

now to take it a step further, are there people running setups with multiple sub/enc tuned to different freq.?
say a 20hz sub/enc, a 40hz sub/enc and a 60hz sub/enc?

don't do it. it can be done, but too much pita to setup to get right.
do a search on abc box, it has two tunings.
