SQ Subs

It seems that nowadays people look at what driver they can afford that has the biggest Xmax and they are done. When I started in car audio, you listened to 3-4 different models, tried them in a few different boxes, added stuffing, took stuffing away, then spent alot of time on the rest of the system.
I think the average driver today is worse than the average driver of the past. The low budget subs today are absolutely horrible compared to the low budget subs of yesterday. But the high end drivers of today are capable of so much more than the pasts high end drivers, which were all based on low mass, and really couldn't get very loud and still sound good (compared to todays drivers).

When a manufacturer is developing a new product and it is almost ready to go to market, they may send out a few units to select people for some real world use and testing - aka Beta Testing. Based on the results of these real world tests they may tweak the product before release to the general product.
