i use a sealed box for my 12" avi sls300 woofers mounted in the rear of my car and a vented box for the avi sl138 5.25" woofer mounted in my dash, i chose these alignments because that is what the woofer dictates is the best sounding box for the individual speaker. having said that you can take a woofer that is designed to sound best in a sealed box, vent it and get more output at the sacrifice of overall quality. many prople get lost in the grey area between quantity and quality but in the end its what sounds best to you
- need a woofer that will work well in an IB situation, which can be kinda rare these days since IB has been unpopular for a little while
- have to make very sure that the front side of the woofer baffle is completely sealed and separated from the back. You don't want the rear wave to interfere with the front wave
- having the backs of your woofers exposed to your trunk is risking easy damage to them
- you are at the mercy of how well your trunk is sealed as to how well of a 'box' it will be. Basically, IB is like having a very large, sorta-sealed box. A leaky sub box is no fun so make sure your trunk is well sealed
- potentially lower output compared to sealed or vented
