I would think how much overkill it was would depend on the wattage .1000 plus I don,t think it,s overkill at all .

12 or even 14 gauge wire from the amp to the sub is fine. You will gain nothing of any consequence by using 8 gauge wire, even if your amp puts out 1000 watts.

Do the math. If subs are 4 ohm, wire is .01 ohm you're losing a wopping .25% in the wire. Yes, that's 1/4 of 1%.

So, if you have 1000 wrms at full volume, you're losing 2-1/2 watts in the wire.
So, IF you olny had 14 ga. and IF it measured .04 ohm, you'd loose a horrendous 10 watts. Oh Nooooo.

Do you really think anybody can tell the difference between 990 and 997-1/2 watts?

I used 10 gauge on my subs. Just because i could.

Feel free to change the numbers to 2 or even 1 ohm, do the math, see what happens.....
