Ok, here is the scenario.

Midrange drivers sized 4", 5", and 6" have inherent trade offs due to their size. Anyone have direct experience playing with all 3 sizes in a kick panel setup?

Thanks for your commments defro.

Space does seem to be an issue with everybody's kick panels. I've been debating between my existing 4" midrange, a larger 5" Utopia midrange that has more bottom end, and the Audiom 6WM which I have no clue about.

Thanks Dereck

As you know, I have the same drivers you speak of. I must admit, that 4 is pretty darn special. My only gripe is that I'd like to run the kicks a bit lower, (from about 100hz up) but the 4s are running pretty short on excursion to be able to do that at decent volume levels.

That said, I haven't gotten into seriously tuning enclosures for the 4s yet.

The Utopia 5 has really good on and off axis response up to 5khz, and is usable down to 80hz at moderate volume levels.

The Audiom 6WM is suited to run above 150hz, but it's cone area would allow a bit of cheating down to 100hz without getting too much excursion. The down side of this driver is a nasty set of peaks about 2.5khz, and a steep roll off above this point. This forces a rather low X.O. point for a prospective tweeter, and bit of EQ work to get things to sit right. But....this driver has an extremely low cone mass, coupled with very low voice coil inductance. This means in theory that this driver should have extremely fast midrange response. Haven't heard one in person, so I don't know.

Anyway, I'm open to everyone elses comments.

I have a bit of a more unique situation but I can comment on my how my 7" B&W midbass AND my Rockford Power 4" mids (and the 1", large format tweeters) are doing in my trucks kickpanels now that I got the system working last night

See my truck has a whole lot of kick panel area. The 7s play free air up high in the kick where there is a nice 6x8ish size oval opening for the fresh air flap (thank you GM, it makes up for the STUPID placement of the power window motor in the door). The 4/tweet are in pods below. The 7s have the cavity behind the kick panel for airspace. I'm not sure how much air that is but it seems fairly substantial. The output is AWESOME! Sounds like a single 10 in the dash. Lots of output down to 50Hz and below. Very bold, continues in the upper volume range. I'm quite happy

I have some ScanSpeak 'variovent' pads that are planned for installation behind the midbass at some point.

I've always been a fan of the 3-way front stage and it has always been the 6/4/tweet setup with the 6s in the doors. And it's worked well for me, although in my last system in the Daytona midbass was quite weak for some reason but in the Avenger it was very nice. The compact size of the 4/tweet in the kick allows for more flexibility in aiming them too.

I've heard the Audiom 6W, I would not ever use it without a very good midbass like a 5WS or better.

You would not want to let the 6W play down anywhere near 100Hz as it's excursion abilities are very limited and I believe it would be very lacking anywhere below 300Hz.
