Or am I smoking some real good ****?
I thought I was having an issue with my left speaker (but it was just a tube) so I called Snell and asked for a quote for new drivers (they sell 'kits') and it was only ~$160 US for 2 mids and a tweet... and these are decent speakers (Snell B minor).
I'm familiar with Snell actually. I've seen many speaker companies using cheaper drivers....like Totem using LPG supertweeters that cost about 15 bucks then charging an arm and a leg basically for the cabinets because they use drivers that cost next to nothing.
So I guess what your trying to say, Dukk, is that it's kinda hit and miss...it may be the best tweet I've ever heard or quite possibly the worst?

Snell historically spends VERY little on drivers and huge sums on the crossover networks. Each crossover is unique to the speaker and is calibrated to the "Master" Snell speaker. Pretty slick and that tells you where they are in this argument but Monitor Audio, for instance, used to use very expensive drivers and painfully simple crossovers. Snell and Monitor both gave the credit of their success of their products to their design philosophy. Do it right and it will sound good I figure.

And how do you know they only cost $15.00?
Ever seen a pair of Totem speakers?
There enclosures alone are worth the price. Not to mention the cross overs...and is R+D worth nothing these days?
It takes more than just opening up a cataloge, ordering drivers and then slapping them into an enclosure and *pow* you have one of the worlds best speakers...
No, never seen a totem speaker in my life....I'm just talking about something I've never seen or heard.
You can only R+D so much before everything starts looking the same....one comapny R+D's for years and come up with something great and next thing you know every company is using the same technology.

The Totem speaker that uses LPG supertweeter is the Shamman...top of the line floor standing towers.
Sorry there not 15 bucks there 45.
Yes I know they sound great, I've had the opportunity to listen to them in Toronto, but how much research can you do before there's nothing left except to put the pieces together and have the ultimate drivers?
Obviously the perfect driver will never be, since in car audio there are so many variables to consider that can and will mess with your tonallity/imaging.

Hey Jared - do you, um, own a set of Totems?

Just seemed to be a little defensive
I would never discount the costs of R&D. It is important. But at the end of the day he is looking for drivers, not cabinets, not passives, so the topic is how to get stellar drivers for cheap
