2 Noob Questions

Hey ya'll, I have a couple of stupid questions about subwoofers. I want to put a sub in my camry but I don't feel like spending too much money on it since I'm buying a new car soon. Now the thing is that I have a Sub at home from a home theater system that I rarely use and I'd rather put it to use by shoving it in my trunk. So the first question is; is it even possible to do that?

And secondly, my friend is selling a pair of subs for $200, so that is another option but I just don't feel like spending 200 bucks. Now that would be ok BUT, he says I NEED an amplifier to be able to use the sub. So could you confirm that for me please.

well there is alot to putting in an amp.

if you have a deck it is easier, if you dont have a deck you will need a line output converter for around 20 bucks.
then secondly in order to feed the amp you will need a battery in your trunk or run a power wire through your firewall.

yes the sub you have will most likely work, and what size of sub is it?
do you know what its rated at... for example 200W max 100Wrms @ 8ohm's...

and some amps are very inexpensive... you can pick up an 800Wmax 400Wrms amp from walmart for like 189 plus tax, i think its a sony...

Just remember one thing ... Buy cheap get cheap ... And in the sense, don't expect much from a home theatre sub compared to whats on the shelves for car subs these days ... Personal opinion anyway.

You can buy a cheap amp to power the 2 subs that your friend is selling for $200. I bought my subs for $200 from a member on here years ago, and I spent $400 on an amp for them. I love my results. I spent a lot but I'm completely happy in the end.

"Buy cheap get cheap" almost you missed the need to replace the cheap thing because it died .then you go out a new cheap part (at this part if you paid for the good part it would of bin less and better )

Thanks for replying guys.

I've actually went to my cousin's and we hooked the sub up. It works but there isn't much power, so as zinger said, an amp does help a lot. The sub is 200rms 4.8ohm, so it's not too powerful as I understand. So basically, out of that little experiment, I found out that a home sub doesn't work too well in a car.

Now I am seriously considering buying those subs that my friend (it's actually just some guy that I know) is selling. The question is: are kicker subs any good? As well, could someone explain to me what is the difference between a 2 channel amp and a 4 channel amp and why is the price gap so big between different amps? Is it just because of the name (make) and the amplification power, or are there other reasons. And the price difference between subs is it also for the same reasons, or…?

Anyway, I’m off to sleep, I’ll check for replies tomorrow.

as the name states there are more channels, so more power seperation.
the 4 chann amp has 2 sets of imputs to control the left and right independently, as well as the front and back independently. and if you really like to mess around with the fade on your deck it is better to get a 4 channel for your speakers.
now depending on your wiring setup either a 2 channel amp or a mono amp will work.
if you cant find a 1 ohm amp at the price you are looking for... for example your subs have single 2 ohm voice coils, the best option would be to buy a 2 channel amp that can do 2 ohm's stereo, and it will most likely be 4 ohm's mono... so basically impedence and amp choice go hand in hand.
