amp/sub problem

I decided to finally try and see why my amp and sub aren't working.

- visual check of fuse at battery looks fine
- subwoofer is showing 4ohms on multimeter
- amp shows 7.4v when I put multimeter on the negative and positive connections.

I'm thinking the sub is fine but the 7.4v shown by the amp is the problem? From what I read that should be showing 12v?

Something else I missed?

Thanks for any help

Are you checking at the power terminals or the speaker terminals?

That's not much info to go on if you want someone here to help diagnose the problem. What's in the rest of the system? Distro blocks, check all fuses, etc.

I checked both at the power terminals on the amp which are showing 7.4V and the speaker terminals which are showing 4ohms.

Very simple system, jvc head unit, 1 x 10" sub and 1 x amp. All fuses look to be fine. Power goes from battery to fuse then straight to amp.

Thanks for the reply. Hope thats enough info. Should the amp be showing 12V at the power terminals?

have you checked voltage after the fuse? if it's 7.4v just after the fuse and 12v just before, then I'd swap fuses and re-check. if it's 7.4 before the fuse then there's a wiring problem from battery to fuse.

You were correct. The ground wire from the amp to chassis had come loose from the ring terminal.

Thanks for the help guys
